LIVE ANALYSIS | Congress resumes electoral vote count

Protesters pressed past police and broke into the U.S. Capitol as Congress met in a joint session on Jan. 6 to count each state’s electoral votes and confirm President-elect Joe Biden as the winner. As many as three dozen congressional Republicans were expected to launch a final challenge to the results of the 2020 presidential election.

It has become routine after recent elections for House lawmakers on the losing side to put up a symbolic fight over the results, which they can do under an 1880s law governing the process. It has been less common for senators to join them, but this time a dozen will. Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) will lead the challenge of the votes and call for an “emergency audit” to investigate baseless fraud allegations.

The Post’s Libby Casey will anchor live coverage, featuring reporters Aaron Blake, Rhonda Colvin, James Hohmann and Amber Phillips. Read more: Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

The inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris - 1/20 (FULL LIVE STREAM)

President Biden and Vice President Harris took the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20.

An inauguration like no other, the ceremony takes place amid the coronavirus pandemic and two weeks after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol. The D.C. police chief has said that upwards of 20,000 National Guardsmen are expected to be in place throughout the city to guard against violence.

President Trump left Washington on the morning of Biden’s swearing-in, becoming the first modern-day president to skip his successor’s inauguration.

House impeaches Trump for second time - 1/13 (FULL LIVE STREAM)

The House of Representatives is poised to impeach President Trump for a second time when it meets on Jan. 13 to consider an article charging him with “incitement of insurrection.”

The push for an unprecedented second impeachment took a dramatic bipartisan turn as several senior House Republicans joined the Democratic effort to remove Trump for his role in inciting an angry mob to storm the Capitol. Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), the third-ranking House Republican, and Rep. John Katko (N.Y.), the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, both publicly stated that they support impeachment. They are joined by Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.).

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has signaled that the earliest the chamber would begin acting is Jan. 19, the day before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Reuters) - Protests opposing U.S. President Donald Trump took to the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, for a third straight night ahead of this week's Republican National Convention, where Trump will be nominated for a second term on Monday. A few dozen demonstrators and law enforcement clashed on Sunday night near the site where delegates are gathering to formally select Trump as their party's candidate for the Nov. 3 election, Reuters images showed. Officers arrested four people and used pepper spray on the crowd, which had blocked traffic and, according to officials, also assaulted police. Crowds continued to block traffic and prevent buses and cars from moving, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Twitter, describing one of the incidents. While officers were clearing the intersection, they deployed pepper spray and made two arrests. In separate social media posts, the police department described demonstrators interfering with an arrest and ...
