President Trump arrives in Dallas to participate in community roundtable , attend fundraiser

President Donald Trump is in Dallas to resume in-person fundraising and participate in a community roundtable. During this meeting, the president will discuss solutions to historic economic, health and justice disparities in American communities, according to a senior White House official.

The president plans to announce his administration's plan for holistic revitalization and recovery during the event, the official said.

Trump Arrives in Dallas for Race Relations Talk, Fundraiser

President Donald Trump was ready to discuss race relations and policing on Thursday before a friendly audience in Dallas as he weighs executive action on police reform in response to the national outcry following the death of George Floyd.

Notably, Dallas’ mayor and three top law enforcement officials, all of whom are black, won’t be on hand for the roundtable discussion at the Dallas campus of Gateway Church.

Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall, Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown, and Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot did not receive invitations to the event, according to their offices. Mayor Eric Johnson was invited but will not be attending because of prior commitments, according to an aide.

A senior administration who briefed reporters ahead of Trump’s trip, speaking on condition of anonymity, said other law enforcement officials will be in attendance but did not directly respond to a question about why the three officials weren’t invited.

Democrats on Capitol Hill have unveiled sweeping police reform legislation, including provisions to ban choke holds and limit legal protections for police. Congressional Republicans say they are also open to some reforms, including a national registry of use-of-force incidents so police officers cannot transfer between departments without public awareness of their records.

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and senior adviser Jared Kushner have been discussing possible packages with GOP lawmakers, but it’s unclear what the president himself would be willing to accept. The White House is preparing executive orders and legislative proposals that Trump plans to unveil over the coming months, according to the senior administration official.

Trump has publicly expressed sympathy for the family of Floyd and suggested that Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin, who prosecutors say pressed his knee down on Floyd’s neck for several minutes, must have “snapped.”

But Trump has also underscored that he believes that 99% of police are “great, great people.” Top advisers, including Attorney General William Barr, have rejected the notion that systemic racial bias is a problem in American law enforcement.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, dismissed Trump’s Dallas visit in advance as a “photo-op” and charged that the president has “run away from a meaningful conversation on systemic racism and police brutality.”

The president on Wednesday met with a group of conservative African American commentators and allies to discuss policing, education, business, and other issues. He held a similar meeting on Monday at the White House with law enforcement officials.

Trump, whose campaign effort has been largely sidelined by the coronavirus, will also hold a high-dollar fundraiser during his visit to Dallas. It is expected to raise $10 million to be split between his campaign, the Republican National Committee and 22 state parties, according to a GOP official.

President Trump Arrives in Dallas for National Rifle Association speech

President Donald Trump made his fourth consecutive visit to the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting Friday.

Trump told supporters at the NRA's 147th convention that his administration in Washington that is fighting to protect your Second Amendment, and we will protect your Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment will never ever be under siege as long as I am your president, he said.

Vice President Mike Pence also offered a vigorous defense of gun rights. He pointed to work by Trump's administration to address school security and support for changes to the background check system, as well as arming teachers.

The quickest way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” the vice president said.

He faulted media outlets for not telling the whole story about firearms in America and the role of firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens making communities safer.

When the president addressed NRA at the leadership forum last year he became the first sitting president to speak before the gun-rights group in 30 years.

More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the convention at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center in Downtown Dallas through Sunday.

In addition to the president and vice president, Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz from Texas, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Pax are attending. The convention also includes meetings, seminars, exhibits and training sessions.

“It’s motivational to get behind something you stand for. So in other words, I’m here to support something I truly believe in and that’s the right to bear arms and protect myself,” said Patrick Byrne, who is attending the convention.

The president has enjoyed great support from the NRA. But he temporarily strayed from the group’s anti-gun-control message and mission following the Parkland, Fla. school shooting that killed 17 people.

Shortly after the shooting amid rising voices for stricter gun control laws the president said he would stand up to gun lobby. But he has seemingly softened that tough talk.

Given the current debate in the United States over gun control, Dallas Mayor Pro-Temp Dwaine Caraway did not want the meeting to happen in the city.

Dallas police said officers will be at the convention center to maintain a peaceful atmosphere. There are groups planning to stage protests in support of tighter gun laws but they are being kept away from the immediate area.

Many of the protestors say they want what they call common sense gun laws.

One group has announced a protest set for 6:30 p.m. at Dallas City Hall Plaza. There’s another organization staging a separate protest Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the same location.
