Space launch is the earliest part of a flight that reaches space. Space launch involves liftoff, when a rocket or other space launch vehicle leaves the ground, floating ship or midair aircraft at the start of a flight. Liftoff is of two main types: rocket launch (the current conventional method), and non-rocket space launch (where other forms of propulsion are employed, including airbreathing jet engines or other kinds).

Rocket launch is the only current way to reach space. In some cases an airbreathing (jet engine) first stage has been used as well.Non-rocket space launch is a launch into space where some or all of the needed speed and altitude are provided by something other than expendable rockets. A number of alternatives to expendable rockets have been proposed. In some systems such as Skyhooks, rocket sled launch, and air launch, a rocket is used to reach orbit, but it is only part of the system.

You need a sound system with a lot of power and a great sub (turned up to house shaking level) to get the right effect of this video. I made this for all the people who dreamed of seeing a launch in person but were never able to make the trip themselves.

Using dozens of different video sources and countless audio versions of Shuttle launches I mixed this little clip together to mimic as close an experience to the real thing as I could. I know that the exact sequence of countdown events is somewhat compressed and not time-accurate but I was going more for the 'feel' of a high energy launch experience rather than a technical documentary. Throttle Up and SRB Separation are sounds as might be heard from onboard acoustic transducers picking up resonant vibration in the vehicle's structure.

Please take care not to damage your sound equipment during playback. I did not do anything to boost the low frequency roar of the Shuttle during liftoff but the SRB and SSME thrust noise may be taxing to even high quality sub-woofers and speaker cones if played too loud.

For those who sit through the last few frames you can catch a glimpse of my home theater system I built a couple of years ago. This video really is best viewed at 165 inches or better!

Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th 2010.
I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final scheduled flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace.

This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight -- in order to experiencing the all the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space.

In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit.

After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time... this time as on call STS-335, which would remain flight ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission.

A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allowed the already flight ready Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135.

Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center.

GoPro Awards: On a Rocket Launch to Space

On November 6th, 2015 UP Aerospace Inc. launched the 20-foot (6 meter) tall SL-10 rocket into near-space. The mission: deploy the Maraia Capsule testing the aerodynamics and stability of the payload on re-entry to the atmosphere. The rocket reached an altitude of 396,000ft (120,700 meters) and speeds up to Mach 5.5 (3800mph or 6115km/h) at engine burnout.

STS-129 HD Launch

Space shuttle Atlantis and its six-member crew began an 11-day delivery flight to the International Space Station on Monday with a 2:28 p.m. EST launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will transport spare hardware to the outpost and return a station crew member who spent more than two months in space.

Atlantis is carrying about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain a proper orientation in space. The large equipment can best be transported using the shuttle's unique capabilities.

Of course in our video there is some amount of fiction. Anticipating your questions, we'll try to answer some of them :).

1) We had to move away from the version of a spacecraft with an aerodynamic fairing (a cap worn on a spacecraft and which is detached along with the emergency escape system before the separation of the boosters). Here there were aesthetic considerations—due to the fact that the camera leads the viewer inside the ship. For real rockets, the aerodynamic fairing is an important component, as it helps to reduce air resistance while launching into orbit.

2) In our video, the spacecraft changes the inclination of its orbit quite abruptly (almost from a polar orbit to an equatorial orbit), since we very much wanted to show different perspectives of the Earth. But at the moment such a radical change in orbital inclination of satellites is impossible. In this video, the rocket is launched in the Far East of Russia (where the new spaceport called Vostochny Cosmodrome is located), and the rocket’s separated stages fall into the Pacific Ocean. After about 10 minutes, the manned transport spacecraft Mizyaka-Dizyaka already goes into orbit and becomes an artificial satellite of the Earth. First, it flies over New Zealand, then over Antarctica, next Europe and the Northwest and Far East of Russia, before changing the inclination of its orbit and beginning moving against the rotation of the Earth.

3) We decided to add to our video a talking on-board computer, which reports information about the flight, and decided to give the role of talking with the MCC to the voice of the moderator, adding a special sound effect simulating a radio link.

4) The gliding descent of the command module to Earth usually takes several hours, but only a few seconds of this process are shown in our video.

5) At the end of this video, the children will surely be delighted to see the familiar tugboat from our previous “Construction game” series. In reality, a large aircraft carrier is used to transport the reentered spacecraft.

6) Astronauts do not actually drink water and other drinks in bottles like in our video, but in soft foil bags with straws. We decided to show what would occur if we tried to drink juice or water from an ordinary bottle.

And one last remark: for those who are interested in knowing what time the onboard clock shows, it is set to Greenwich Time.

We picked out music and sound effects very carefully so that even little children will not be scared by (tested on our 3-year-old son Daniel :)) So, make yourself comfortable and turn up the volume! Listen to the roar at the spaceport when the rocket is being launched! We wish you an exciting trip!

Here are a few interesting facts from the field of astronautics:

The area of a single parachute for a descending spacecraft is the size of a football field.


It takes about 10 minutes to place a spacecraft or satellite into orbit.

The ISS (International Space Station) orbits the Earth with a period of one and a half hours.

When a command module enters the atmosphere, the air around it turns into fiery plasma. Its color changes from yellow to purple as the temperature rises. The command module is covered with a special heat-resistant covering, which protects it from overheating.

SpaceX Falcon Heavy- Elon Musk's Engineering Masterpiece

Tens of thousands of spectators made the pilgrimage from across the country & 22 million people around the world on Youtube witnessed the thunderous roar of the SpaceX's new 23-story-tall jumbo rocket as it has blasted off on its first test flight, carrying Elon Musk’s red Tesla sports car aiming for an endless trip past Mars.
The Falcon Heavy rose from the same launch pad used by NASA nearly 50 years ago to send men to the Moon. With lift-off, the Heavy became the most powerful rocket in use today, doubling the lift-off punch of its closest competitor.
Within three minutes, the Falcon Heavy’s two side boosters separated from the central rocket in one of the most critical points of the flight. Some eight minutes after launch, a pair of sonic booms rocked the area as the two side boosters set down in near synchrony on two landing pads.
Flying atop the Falcon Heavy is SpaceX & Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s cherry-red Tesla Roadster, carrying a passenger—sort of. SpaceX revealed last weekend that a mannequin wearing the company’s new spacesuit would ride in the driver’s seat of the electric sports car ,nicknamed Starman.
