Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th, 2010.
I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final scheduled flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in-depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace.

This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, the footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight -- in order to experience the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space.

In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit.

Enjoy the ride!

MORE BACKGROUND
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time... this time as on-call STS-335, which would remain flight-ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission.
A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allow the already flight ready Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135.
Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center.
Errata: an editing error at the end of the video states the launch was 2012, rather than the correct year of 2010.
Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience
Space shuttle Atlantis and its six-member crew began an 11-day delivery flight to the International Space Station on Monday with a 2:28 p.m. EST launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will transport spare hardware to the outpost and return a station crew member who spent more than two months in space.
Atlantis is carrying about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain a proper orientation in space. The large equipment can best be transported using the shuttle's unique capabilities
Ice Team Inspects NASA's Shuttle Atlantis During STS-132 Launch Countdown
At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, members of the Final Inspection Team, also known as the Ice Team, performs a walkdown of Kennedy's Launch Pad 39A during space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132 launch countdown on May 14. The six-member team walks on every level of the pad's fixed service structure, inspecting the shuttle, external fuel tank, solid rocket boosters, pad structure and ground equipment for signs of ice buildup, debris or anything else that might be amiss prior to launch. As part of the inspection, photos are taken and transmitted to the launch team for review.
A videographer for NASA was included as a member of the team to capture the first-ever up close, high-definition video of this important and hazardous inspection process.
STS-132: The Mission Highlights
From pre-launch preparations to a safe landing twelve days later, the milestones of STS-132 and its crew's accomplishments are recapped in this comprehensive look back at the latest shuttle mission to the International Space Station. Along with Atlantis' launch and return to NASA's Kennedy Space Center, other highlighted events include the mission's three spacewalks, the installation of the Russian Mini Research Module-1, Rassvet (dawn) on the ISS's Zarya module, and media interviews of the STS-132 crew of Commander Ken Ham, Pilot Tony Antonelli and Mission Specialists Garrett Reisman, Steve Bowen, Mike Good and Piers Sellers. This was the final of 32 flights by shuttle Atlantis, completing a 25-year career covering more than 120 million miles.
Space Shuttle Atlantis Returns To Earth STS-132
With 32 missions and more than 25 years of service, space shuttle Atlantis has carried more than 200 astronauts and flown more than 100 million miles. Having played a pivotal role in science, exploration and building the International Space Station, Atlantis is prepared to fly its last planned mission, STS-132. Its legacy spans the years from the shuttle-Mir flights, through the construction of the International Space Station, to the final servicing mission of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.
Safe Landing Ends Atlantis' Final Flight
STS-132 Commander Ken Ham and his five crewmates: Pilot Tony Antonelli and Mission Specialists Garrett Reisman, Steve Bowen, Mike Good and Piers Sellers are safely back on Earth after space shuttle Atlantis glided to a picture-perfect landing at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla. on Wednesday morning, May 26. It was Atlantis' 32nd and final flight, traveling a total of more than 120 million miles. The 12-day, STS-132 mission delivered the Russian Mini Research Module-1, Rassvet (dawn) to the International Space Station.
Space Shuttle Launch Audio - play LOUD (no music) HD 1080p
- - Created through FAIR USE for educational purposes - - STS-121
You need a sound system with a lot of power and a great sub (turned up to house shaking level) to get the right effect of this video. I made this for all the people who dreamed of seeing a launch in person but were never able to make the trip themselves.
Using dozens of different video sources and countless audio versions of Shuttle launches I mixed this little clip together to mimic as close an experience to the real thing as I could. I know that the exact sequence of countdown events is somewhat compressed and not time-accurate but I was going more for the 'feel' of a high energy launch experience rather than a technical documentary. Throttle Up and SRB Separation are sounds as might be heard from onboard acoustic transducers picking up resonant vibration in the vehicle's structure.
Please take care not to damage your sound equipment during playback. I did not do anything to boost the low frequency roar of the Shuttle during liftoff but the SRB and SSME thrust noise may be taxing to even high quality sub-woofers and speaker cones if played too loud.
For those who sit through the last few frames you can catch a glimpse of my home theater system I built a couple of years ago. This video really is best viewed at 165 inches or better!
