The Veer Dola Exercise is a replication of battles that were fought on similar mountains and slopes, during the 1999 Kargil war. The name ‘Veer Dola’ is a tribute to the HAWS instructor Lance Naik Dola Ram, who made the ultimate sacrifice by setting up ropes on steep cliffs and making way for the army on the impassable mountains.

Some of the highest battlefields like Siachen can be unforgiving even for the toughest soldiers; where low oxygen level and sub-zero temperatures make it one of the most hostile places to live in, let alone fight. At HAWS Gulmarg which is situated close to 9,000 feet above sea level, Indian Army men train to survive and fight in the world’s highest battleground at 20,000 feet.

Himalayan Glacier Walk Training at HAWS | High Altitude Warfare School E3P2 | Veer by Discovery

Watch Indian Soldiers training in Himalayan Glacier. Trekking in glaciated terrains is no walk in the park with the heavy ice-walking shoes called Scarpas. Check out full episodes of Breaking Point High Altitude Warfare School:

The soldiers have to do exercises at immense heights and critically low temperatures in snow filled mountains to acclimatize themselves. It takes a lot of determination to walk with heavy Military Carbon Scarpa shoes on high altitudes. These shoes weigh approximately 4 kgs and have sharp metal blades that can severely injure the Jawans if they are not careful. Any cut with the crampon can result in 2-3 stitches on the leg. At glaciated terrain, it takes a lot of time to heal that cut.

Some of the highest battlefields like Siachen can be unforgiving even for the toughest soldiers; where low oxygen level and sub-zero temperatures make it one of the most hostile places to live in, let alone fight.

The soldiers have to battle ever excruciating pain to climb the giant rock faces in the Rock Craft Test. These are often the first barrier for troops on the enemy front lines in case of real war scenario. In the Rock Craft Test Base 29 and Base 20 was one of the most challenging ones, because it requires all the muscle power and techniques which instructors have taught in the previous days of training.

Simply having muscle-power, isn’t enough for a soldier to become mountain warriors of the Indian Army. Because in rock craft training at High Altitude Warfare School, technique is everything. At different rock faces, trainee soldiers have to use a different technique or different kinds of holds. There are 3 kinds of holds: first is handhold, second is foothold, third is combination hold. Apart from this, they have to master 14 different kinds of knots & hitches, which we find very important for mountaineering.

Some of the highest battlefields like Siachen can be unforgiving even for the toughest soldiers; where low oxygen level and sub-zero temperatures make it one of the most hostile places to live in, let alone fight.
