15 World’s Strangest Fruits

Here are the top 15 most exotic and strange fruits from around the world like the square watermelon and the largest citrus fruit ever!

Subscribe to American Eye

8. Pummelo
Also known as the Chinese Grapefruit, this is actually the largest of all citrus fruits, meaning bigger than a normal grapefruit. The thick greenish yellow exterior is similar to that of a grapefruit but also tastes similar to one but sweeter. Chinese New Year traditions consider a Pummelo gift as a sign of good luck prosperity and fertility. Despite it being popular in Chinese culture, the fruit is actually native to southeast asia. High in fiber and vitamin C it makes for a healthy snack

7. Custard Apple
This strange fruit gets the weird name of “bull’s heart” due to its external appearance. For a long time, this fruit has been prized for its medicinal properties. About 8 centimeters in diameter it has a delicious taste. The skin of the fruit is thin and tough and the inside is surrounded by seeds. A number of health benefits include, immunity boosts, energy boosts, anti cancerous properties, better vision, better dental health. And the list goes on! This little strange fruit can do quite a bit of good for you. So don’t let its strange appearance scare you off.

6. The Rose Apple
Here in this photo you see the intriguing rose apple which is prized in Southeast asia. Not only for it’s taste, but it actually smells like roses too! The bell shape makes it appear as if it’s a blossom of a beautiful rose. Unlike most of the fruits on this list, you’re able to eat it all the way down to the core, like an actual apple. They are often praised for their ability to detoxify the body, preventing certain types of cancer, reduce fevers and cure bacterial infections. Not every fruit is capable of doing that!

5. Red Banana
We’re definitely used to seeing a yellow banana or even green ones from time to time, but did you know there were red bananas? This variety of bananas are not just different because they’re red but because they’re sweeter and plumper than most varieties of bananas. They’re often at their prime when they have a maroon or deep color red and unbruised. This variety also contains more vitamin C and beta carotene and the more red, the higher the level. Specialty supermarkets in the US carry this superfruit year round but you just gotta look specially for them.

4. Salak
Would you be willing to eat a fruit nicknamed the snake fruit? This fruit here has eerily similar looking skin with that of a snake. This fruit is often found in southern asia in places like Indonesia and Malaysia. After it’s peeled it starts to look similar to garlic. It’s most commonly sold on the island of bali to locals and tourists. It tends to taste similar to pineapple and lemon juice. The fruit can be made into Salak wine which has about a 13.5 alcohol content, similar to wine from grapes. Would you be willing to give it a try?

3. Ugli Fruit
This strange fruit earns the insensitive name of the Ugli fruit. It can’t help the way it was made. This melon-sized citrus fruit from the island of Jamaica is slightly larger than a grapefruit and when it’s ripe, it can get as sweet as a tangerine. Others describe the taste to be more sour and tastes like a hybrid between a lemon and tangerine. The flesh inside the fruit is very juicy and high in vitamin C. It’s also available in grocery stores around the world for inexpensive prices.

2. The Physalis
Also known as the ground cherry, this strange fruit can be grown in warm, subtropical climates in many parts of the world. They are many indigenous to North and South America, especially in Mexico and Peru. The large papery husk, covers the cherry. They grow in a similar fashion to tomatoes and are most commonly used in jams and jellies. Similar to other gooseberries, the physalis are vulnerable to many pests like spider mites, aphids and whiteflies. It has a unique sweet sour taste almost like a strawberry covered in lemon juice.

1.Square Watermelon
You have to admit that there is just something intriguing about these square watermelons that come from Japan. It’s still just like any other watermelon out there but only square. The shape makes them much easier to transport in shipping containers and just about anyone can grow them. While the watermelon is still on the vine, it’s placed in a square container and it grows to be this shape. The Japanese also like this design because it can easily be placed in their small refrigerator. These cost a bit more then if mother nature designed them.

Air Rifles Are The Best Tool For Farmers

County health officials are warning the public to avoid contact with the common California ground squirrel after detecting plague in three of the animals trapped in two local campgrounds near Palomar Mountain.

Two squirrels were trapped during routine testing at Cedar Grove Campground. A third infected squirrel was trapped at nearby Doane Valley Campground.

The most common way to get plague from a squirrel is to be bitten by a flea that has recently been dining on squirrel blood, said Chris Conlan, supervising vector ecologist for the county's Vector Control Program.

Luckily, the fleas that are transferring plague from squirrel to squirrel much prefer to bite squirrels instead of people, Conlan said.

Though a flea bite is the most common way for the plague to infect a human, a direct animal bite could also cause an infection, Conlan said.

Fleas that start out on squirrels can also transfer to other wild animals and even family pets, Conlan warned. The county usually detects a few plague cases during routine squirrel monitoring each year, though none were detected in 2011.

SoCal squirrel plague no laughing matter. Or is it?

Though the ecologist said he was aware of no human plague cases in San Diego County, cases have cropped up in other parts of the state.

In 2006, for example, a 28-year-old Los Angeles woman tested positive for plague after being hospitalized with fever, septic shock and painful swelling, according to a report published by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health. She survived after undergoing treatment with two types of antibiotics. An investigation later found that she had handled raw rabbit meat that came from Kern County where plague had been detected.

A report published by the California Department of Public Health states that there have been 62 human plague cases reported in California from 1926 to 2013. Of those 39 survived and 23 died. Citing confidentiality issues the state agency declined to provide information on where the deaths occurred, but did provide a total number of cases per county. From 1926 to 2013 Kern County had the most confirmed cases with 9 and San Diego County had zero.

To avoid the disease, health officials caution against feeding. touching, or camping near the burrows of wild animals. Touching sick or dead animals is also a risk, and household pets should be protected with flea control medication and kept out of areas where plague has been detected.

Symptoms of plague infection include the sudden onset of fever and chills and tender, swollen lymph nodes. Those who experience these symptoms one week after visiting an area known to have the plague should immediately contact their doctor.

World's Biggest Cave Discovered in Vietnam - Full Documentary

Breathtaking pictures show the world's largest cave in Vietnam which has its own climate and CLOUDS. The spectacular Han Son Doong cave in Vietnam is so gigantic it could fit a 40-storey skyscraper within its walls.Tours are limited to 450 visitors each year in a bid to create a sustainable future for its vast caverns and plant-life
With the eerie green glow inside the mystical, echoing cavern, Vietnam's Han Son Doong cave looks like it could be on the edge of the world. The huge cave - large enough to fit a 40-storey skyscraper - is so massive that it has its own climate, and clouds even form inside it.
At more than 200m high, 150m wide and 5km long, the Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam is so big it has its own river, jungle and climate. Australian photographer John Spies, 59, spent a week photographing the natural wonder of the cave system. With ceilings towering over 200 metres high in places, the cave is a humbling and belittling experience, said John, who has lived in Thailand since 1977 and runs the Cave Lodge guesthouse

It's not a trip for the faint-hearted - it takes a half day trek through a stunning jungle peppered with butterflies and a journey through knee deep rivers to finally get to the entrance of the colossal cave.
Adventurous explorers must also pass through the third largest cave in the world, Hang Ev cave - used as a location for the Peter Pan blockbuster.
