Computational Design of Mechanical Characters

Link to project page & press release:

We developed an interactive design system that allows non-expert users to create animated mechanical characters. Given an articulated character as input, the user iteratively creates an animation by sketching motion curves indicating how different parts of the character should move. For each motion curve, our framework creates an optimized mechanism that reproduces it as closely as possible. The resulting mechanisms are attached to the character and then connected to each other using gear trains, which are created in a semi-automated fashion. The mechanical assemblies generated with our system can be driven with a single input driver, such as a hand-operated crank or an electric motor, and they can be fabricated using rapid prototyping devices.

We demonstrate the versatility of our approach by designing a wide range of mechanical characters, several of which we manufactured using 3D printing. While our pipeline is designed for characters driven by planar mechanisms, significant parts of it extend directly to non-planar mechanisms, allowing us to create characters with compelling 3D motions.

T8 the Bio Inspired 3D Printed Spider Octopod Robot LATEST BREAKİNG NEWS !

T8 the Bio Inspired 3D Printed Spider Octopod Robot

Spiders: some people think they're cool, but most people want to squish them with a rolled up magazine. But before you start swatting, just make sure that eight-legged creature isn't a realistic--and super expensive--robot. As mentioned by Geek.com, Robugtix is now accepting pre-orders on the T8; a remote-controlled arachnid.

The outer shell of the T8 is actually 3D printed, but under the hood are 26 little servo motors. Using the Bigfoot Inverse Kinematics Engine, the T8 is able to move with an eerie level of realism. But operating the little bot doesn't require an immense amount of prior knowledge. Instead, the Bigfoot engine translates simple commands from the remote--sold separately--into those terrifying spider movements.

Before you start making plans to scare your friend with a robotic spider, just know the T8 doesn't come cheap. Pre-ordering the spider-bot before September grants a discount, meaning you'll only pay $1,350 for a kit requiring some assembly. After that date, the price the goes up to $1,500

T8 3D PRINT SPIDER TARANTULA BIO LIFE ANIMATRONIC OCTOPOD ROBOT 26 MOTORS 3 IN EACH LEG AND 2 IN THE ABDOMEN...2011 HONG KONG
Aesthetically and behaviorally realistic, the T8X is the only robot in the market that combines so much resemblance to a real spider with fine movements, programmability, and customizability. With 26 servo motors packed inside the robot and powered by the proprietary Bigfoot™ Robotics Engine, which contains advanced robotics algorithms for controlling multi-legged walking robots, there are endless possibilities for the types of bio-inspired, realistic movements that the robot can make.
By providing simple commands to the robot on your own smartphone, tablet or computer (for example, instructing it to walk forward), the Bigfoot™ Robotics Engine will automatically take care of all the complex mathematical computations in the background, including inverse-kinematics calculations, leg trajectory planning, leg gait coordination, motor control, etc.
So, whether you’re new to robotics and just want to have fun scaring others, or are an expert and want to use it for robotics research, the T8X is an easy and user-friendly way to play or work with some of the coolest and most advanced robotic technologies that exist in the modern world
The benefits of a touch-based Wi-Fi enabled controller by far outshines that of a physical joystick controller.

The built-in T8X Controller App brings out the best of the Wi-Fi technology because:

It’s updateable.
It’s programmable & customizable.
It has a complete user interface with sub-menus instead of just a few buttons
It makes use of a device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) that you already take with you everywhere you go so you don’t have to remember to charge and carry around yet another piece of plastic.

7 Craziest Robot Animals You Never Knew Exist

7 Craziest Robot Animals You Never Knew Existed
#robotic octopus#Smart bird Bot#Robot pets#
Robotic octopus that can study the ocean floor. When it comes to robots, science fiction has conditioned us to think of androids – bipedal machines approximating the human form. But the next generation of robots may be based on very different types of animals: snakes, flies, locusts, and even the multi-tentacled octopus.

7. SmartBird Robot animal
For the SmartBird robot animal, Festo was inspired by the herring gull. The ultralight flying model impresses with its outstanding aerodynamics and maximum agility and is able to take off, fly and land without an additional drive. In doing so, its wings not only beat up and down but twist in a specific manner.

6. The MIT Mini Cheetah Robot Animal:

MIT’s new mini cheetah robot animal is springy and light on its feet, with a range of motion that rivals a champion gymnast. The four-legged powerpack can bend and swing its legs wide, enabling it to walk either right-side-up or upside down.

5. Spider Robot T8 Robot Animal:
Legged robot animal kits aren't anything new, but unlike its competition, the T8 octopod comes with a disturbingly realistic 3D-printed exoskeleton that is sure to make an unforgettable first impression. Robugtix (a robotics company based in Hong Kong) is living up to its name with the lifelike robot tarantula. The T8 is powered by 26 Hitec HS-35HD servo motors (three in each leg, and additional servos to wiggle its abdomen).

4. Robotic snake robot animal (Explores the colon):
Medrobotics’ signature product, the Flex Robotic System, allows physicians to reach deep into the body with minimal risk. The Flex system is based on a snake, with multiple mechanical links.
The snake robot’s “eyes” see in 3D to help the surgeon navigate.

3. Rooster Robot:

Roosters are best known for waking people up at dawn as they announce the start of a new day. But when the Rooster is a robot, it can also save people’s lives. The Rooster is a new robot from Israeli startup RoboTiCan that can help reach injured victims of natural disasters where it’s not safe to send a human rescue worker.

2. Locust Robots Robot Animal

Inspired by the common locust, a tiny high-jumping robot developed in Israel could be used for sending lifesaving reconnaissance data to human rescue teams in disaster situations, or for cleaning up oil spills or for gathering intelligence – and many other difficult missions unsuited to large robots and humans.
1. eMotionButterflies robot animal
They combine the ultralight construction of artificial insects with coordinated flying behavior in a collective. Ten cameras installed in the room record the butterflies using their infrared markers. The cameras transmit the position data to a central master computer, which coordinates the butterflies from outside. The intelligent networking system creates a guidance and monitoring system, which could be used in the networked factory of the future.#7 Craziest Robot Animals You Never Knew Existed

CATIA model of a caterpillar type bio-inspired piping inspection robot

The video is a simulation of a bio-inspired robot which is used for inspection of industrial pipelines. This robot is realized at LS2N, France. The locomotion of the robot resembles the motion of a caterpillar. The prototype is a rigid model. The leg mechanisms are used to have contact with pipeline walls and the central motor takes care of the elongation/retraction feature of the caterpillar.
