How risky is travel in the COVID-19 pandemic?

Summer is here. Though COVID-19 cases are surging, many are still thinking of getting out for some sun, or taking a socially distant vacation. Even if the destination is safe, the journey provides a host of potential exposures. Peter Chin-Hong, MD, Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UCSF School of Medicine, weighs in on the risk of coronavirus exposure for every mode of travel.

Coronavirus outbreak: Saskatchewan to lift travel restrictions to northwest on June 8 | FULL

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said Tuesday that the government would begin lifting travel restrictions related to the novel coronavirus pandemic in the northwest as of June 8, and that La Loche would move into Phases 1 and 2 of the province’s reopening plan.

Phase 3 of the reopening plan, which goes into effect on June 8, will be delayed until further notice in the northwest region, though outdoor gatherings will be allowed to increase to 20 people. Indoor gatherings will remain limited to 10 people in the region.

As travel restrictions are lifted in the northwest region, the number of active cases in the far north continues to decline with just 23 active cases in the region.

There are 33 active cases in the province as a whole, as well as 11 deaths related to COVID-19 in the province.

Health officials reported 14 new recoveries on Tuesday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 602.

COVID-19 Update 11: How exactly the coronavirus becomes airborne.

Different diseases have different modes of transmission. And at the same time, one disease can have multiple modes of transmission. Influenza that’s transmitted by aerosols is generally thought to be associated with a more severe illness than influenza that’s transmitted via contact or fomites.

In this video we continue on from update #10 and examine in greater detail the impact of particle size, the concentration of viral RNA in coarse and fine aerosols, and how they differ in the transmission of COVID-19.

Surprisingly, larger particles (from a cough or sneeze) contain less virus than small particles, and are less likely to penetrate into lungs. Individuals who are sick produce fine, virus laden particles during speaking and breathing that have a high viral load and can travel far down into the lungs of a susceptible individual.

The daily press conference was held by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Prof Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, and Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser.

Here's what they told us:

Boris Johnson said the new quarantine measures for travellers were tough but “necessary” to stop the risk of imported cases triggering a second peak. Travel corridors with countries with low infection rates will be considered, but only when it is safe

The PM refused to be drawn on whether Britons should book a summer holiday to Europe

The NHS test and trace strategy is a vital part of stopping the virus re-emerging

There are global efforts to find a vaccine for the Covid-19, and the PM will chair a summit of the Gavi international vaccine alliance on Thursday

Boris Johnson urged people not to move outdoor gatherings indoors in wet weather, saying the risk of transmission would be much higher and undermine the progress that has been made

He said not being able to secure childcare was a reason to be let off returning to work by employers

Asked why restrictions have been eased when the UK remains at level four on the alert system, Chris Whitty said people were conflating two different things - it was the five tests set by ministers which had to be met before restrictions were relaxed

Today's government press conference was led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, joined by Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, and Sir Patrick Vallance, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK government. Follow the story ????

Here's a round-up of the coronavirus-related stories coming out of the UK today:

Home Secretary Priti Patel has confirmed plans to force almost all arrivals to the UK to isolate for 14 days – with fines of up to £1,000 for those who don’t comply.

All schools in Wales will reopen on 29 June, but with staggered class times to ensure only a third of pupils are in school at any one time.

The PM has promised all coronavirus tests will be turned around within 24 hours by the end of June
Johnson and Sir Keir Starmer clashed over the government’s handling of coronavirus at Prime Minister’s Questions.

In Scotland more people have now died with coronavirus in care homes than in the country's hospitals.

A contact tracer working on the NHS Test and Trace coronavirus scheme says she has not been asked to speak to anyone since beginning work last week.

Italy to lift international travel restrictions from early June as coronavirus lockdown eased

Subscribe to the Evening Standard on YouTube:

Italy will allow people to leave and enter the country from early June as its coronavirus lockdown continues to ease.

The new rules, which will come into force from June 3, come as Italians are also allowed to travel within their own region from Monday.

Italy has had one of the worst death tolls related to coronavirus in Europe, with more than 31,000 fatalities according to Johns Hopkins University.

The Italian Government locked the country down in early March in a bid to slow the spread of the virus - the first European country to do so.

S. Korea re-extends special travel advisory until June 19 as COVID-19 concerns linger

정부, 전 세계 특별여행주의보 6월 19일까지 또 연장

South Korea has extended its special travel advisory by another month in a bid to prevent South Koreans spreading COVID-19 in the country upon their return from overseas.
The foreign ministry says the advisory will remain in place until June 19th.
It added the decision is based on the continued global spread of the virus.
It also stressed that many countries are still applying strict border controls on foreign entrants.
The special advisory is imposed in the case of an urgent and short-term danger to travelers.
Seoul first issued the advisory on March 23rd.
