The Duke of Edinburgh has been laid to rest in an intimate funeral at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The Dean of Windsor paid tribute to Prince Philip's kindness, humour and humanity during the ceremony.

The congregation wore masks and was socially distanced in line with Covid rules, with the Queen seated alone.

The duke's children walked behind his coffin in a funeral procession, followed by a national minute's silence.

More than 730 members of the armed forces took part in the event, but there was a limit of 30 mourners inside St George's Chapel, under coronavirus rules.

Prince Philip Laid to Rest: Why Queen Elizabeth II Sat Alone at Intimate Funeral

Queen Elizabeth II sat alone at Prince Philip’s funeral service, but it was for a good reason. Abiding to COVID-19 protocols, members from each family were required to sit separately throughout the ceremony, which included the Duke of Edinburgh’s widow. In addition, Prince Harry needed to quarantine for five days after traveling from California to the UK. Royal Expert Omid Scobie told ET that Philip helped plan the funeral, and he intended for the ceremony to be a ‘much more private affair.’

Prince Philip funeral details emerge, Prime Minister Johnson won’t attend

Mourners defied requests by Buckingham Palace not to gather and went on to lay flowers and pay tributes to the late Prince Philip on Saturday at Windsor Castle.

The palace released details of the small funeral, which will be held on April 17 at St. George’s chapel, attended by the Queen and members of the royal family.

The Funeral of The Duke of Edinburgh

The Funeral of The Duke of Edinburgh

The Funeral procession and service for His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip, the late husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, will be laid to rest in an intimate service attended by 30 people including members of the royal family.

Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, died at the age of 99 on April 9 in Windsor Castle. He was the nation's longest-serving consort -- the name used to describe the spouse of a reigning monarch -- and had been married to the Queen for 73 years.

His death has left a huge void in the stoic Queen's life, her son, Prince Andrew has said.
