How De Petrillo Perfected The Recipe Of The Suit | MR PORTER

I like to think that what De Petrillo expresses is style, not fashion. It’s an expression of style which maintains its Neapolitan roots but which is of global inspiration.” In the latest chapter of MR PORTER’s Rethinking The Suit series, we journey to Naples to meet Mr Benedetto De Petrillo, the founder of a tailoring brand challenging the craft’s status quo.

How Husbands Is Rethinking The Suit | MR PORTER

While it’s unfair to make assumptions about a person based purely on where they live, you might expect a Parisian tailor to take a rather more philosophical approach to their craft than one based in, say, Milan or London. Philosophy permeates every aspect of French life, after all, from the classroom to the dining table; why should the tailor’s fitting room be off-limits? Stereotypical as it may sound, this theory is lent a certain credibility by Husbands, a menswear atelier in the heart of Paris. Here, being fitted for a suit means first confronting one’s own mortality.

You accept your chronology. You accept that you're not in a constant cycle of youth and that you will die.”

Learn How Your Suit Should Fit

Transcript:

It’s been said that when a suit fits well, it’s the most flattering thing a man can wear.

Whether you wear a suit every day, or only on occasion, ensuring you look your best and feel confident is something the experts at Harry Rosen have the experience to help you with.

Let me share a few pointers that we can apply, regardless of whether your style leans toward a classic or contemporary silhouette.

How the jacket hangs off your shoulders, and the drape of the lapel are the foundations when choosing a ready to wear suit. We want as good a fit as possible before we consider any alterations.

The shoulders should be rounded and smooth with no dimpling or rumpling.

The lapels should be flat and smooth against your chest.

The collar should be smooth against your neck with no bunching or gaping.

The jacket should be fitted to your body – top button at the slimmest part of your waist – with no pulling across the closure.

Sleeves should be smooth with minimal twisting and end just above your wrist, leaving a quarter to half an inch of your shirt cuff exposed.

Vents should lay flat with no flaring or tugging.
Now, on to the trousers.

Pants should be fastened at your natural waist. The seat should be smooth with no creasing or sagging.

The break should naturally crease just above your shoes.

While some rules of style are fun to break, the fit of a suit should be non-negotiable. Consider an appointment with a Harry Rosen Clothing Advisor for the benefit of experience when it comes to your next suit.

And be sure to subscribe, share or like us before you go!

How to make a Savile Row Suit (Part 1) – with Anderson & Sheppard | FASHION AS DESIGN

Follow the making of a bespoke three-piece suit in the style of Savile Row at the helm of one of the best British tailors, Anderson & Sheppard. – Behind a drawn curtain, a master cutter takes an initial series of 27 measurements: 20 for the jacket, 7 for the trousers. From these measurements, the cutter fashions a pattern in heavy brown paper. At the cutter’s table, the cloth is cut in using heavy shears, and the many pieces of fabric are rolled for each garment into tiny packages, which await the tailors.

Well Dressed Style Tip: A Properly Fitting Suit (English)

In this video, Todd Sample of Well Dressed demonstrates the difference between a properly fitting suit and an ill-fitting suit.

Many men actually wear suits which are too large for their body size. The width of the jacket shoulders is often too wide, while sleeves and pant legs are worn too long.

Wearing an ill-fitting suit negatively affects how others perceive you. In general, a suit that is the wrong size makes the wearer look unkempt and unprofessional. Furthermore, short people look shorter and people with large body frames appear even bigger.

Do you want to know what a properly fitting suit looks like? Check out this video.

Thank you!

Mr P. My Way | Painter, Mr Aten Molly | MR PORTER

To celebrate the launch of our latest Mr P. collection, we spent the day with Mr Aten Molly, an Amsterdam-based artist. Here he ruminates on living life at his own pace and dressing according to his own set of rules.

Shop Mr P. here:

Half-Croatian, half-Surinamese and named after Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, Mr Molly is a quite a character. It’s hard not to envy the life of peaceful solitude he has carved out for himself here, or to admire the boldness he has shown in choosing to eschew traditional life goals – salaried employment, home ownership and so on – in favour of forging his own path. And, as we found out when we visited his home, his sense of style is every bit as offbeat and idiosyncratic as the man himself.

The Way I Dress | Mr Jed Lind

The LA-based contemporary artist on how he decides what to wear each morning.

The Toronto-born, LA-based artist, Mr Jed Lind, shows MR PORTER his utilitarian approach to dressing, citing fellow artist Mr Gordon Matta-Clark as an inspiration, and likes clothes that go the distance - he even admits to wearing his A.P.C. jeans until they're covered in holes, before chopping them up, covering them in plaster and incorporating them into his artwork. Watch our final instalment of The Way I Dress to hear more of Mr Lind's musings on life and style and an introduction to the philosophy that he calls dudism.

Mr P. My Way | Architect, Mr Salem Charabi | MR PORTER

In the first of three films created to mark the launch of the latest Mr P. collection,
Copenhagen-based architect Mr Salem Charabi takes a walk in our (brand new) shoes.

Shop Mr P. here:

An unconventional architect, Mr Charabi has similarly unconventional needs when it comes to clothing. And just as he sees his own work as a response to a set of practical conditions – a building’s intended use, for instance, or its geographical location – so he expects the clothes he wears to fulfil the requirements of his day-to-day life. “I don’t just sit down and start drawing,” he says. “The way I work dictates a different expression of my personal style.”
