Humor at work | Andrew Tarvin | TEDxOhioStateUniversity

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this talk Andrew Tarvin talks about how he brought humor to the workplace while he worked at Procter & Gamble. After being complimented by co-workers on how humor helped them enjoy their work, Andrew decided to start becoming a humor engineer--using humor to help people become more efficient and effective in the workplace.

For a final project presentation while working at Procter & Gamble, Andrew Tarvin made presentation slides using Microsoft Paint to bring humor to his PowerPoint presentations. Since then, he has used the skills he learned as an engineer (and his funny personality) to show people how to use humor in the workplace.

Andrew Tarvin is an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, and international comedian. He's worked with more than 100 organizations including Procter & Gamble, GE, and Western & Southern Life Insurance on topics including humor in the workplace, communicating confidently, leadership through change, and strategic disengagement. He is also the author of the best-selling book 501 Ways to Use Humor at Work.

Andrew graduated with a degree in Computer Science & Engineering from The Ohio State University, where he was also a co-founder of the 8th Floor Improv Comedy Group.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Laughter is Medicine | Anjelah Johnson | TEDxUniversityofNevada

Anjelah Johnson shares with us some of her stories and jokes from her one hour special, Mahalo & Goodnight. From getting an awkward massage to her struggles walking in high heels, Anjelah brought the funny and reminded us that laughter is medicine.

Anjelah Johnson was born and raised in San Jose, California and is of Mexican and Native American descent. She became an internet sensation with her viral video, “Nail Salon” which led to many stand up, television and film opportunities. That same year she joined the cast of, “MADtv” as a series regular, which spawned another internet sensation, “Bon Qui Qui.” This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been enjoyed, viewed and replicated by over 65 million people worldwide. After recording and releasing 3 songs and 2 music videos as Bon Qui Qui, Anjelah signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records to release a full album titled, “Gold Plated Dreams”. Anjelah resides in Los Angeles with her husband and continues to act and tour the country with her sold out comedy shows.

Humor in Business | Andrew Tarvin | Humor Engineer | UBX18

Andrew Tarvin is the world’s first Humor Engineer teaching people how to get better results while having more fun.
In his speech he will show you that everyone can use humor even in our work spaces.

----- What is UBX? -----

The short answer is: Useful Brand Experience. Which brand messages are received is no longer a decision of the sender but a choice by the recipient. Annoying messages are ignored and turned off. Marketers are faced with the question of how they can still reach their target groups in the future. The answer is palpably close: as people turn away from the annoying, they turn to the useful. With today’s technologies, including AI, Internet of Things, Chatbots or Apps, marketers have unimagined possibilities to create useful advertising.

That is why Virtual Identity invites 200 marketers and communication experts as well as speakers from all around the world to the yearly UBX Conference in Munich to explore the possibilities of Useful Brand Experience.

Andrew Tarvin: Humor: The Missing Skill For Success And Happiness At Work | Fifteen Seconds Festival

The world has become obsessed with efficiency. Businesses are looking to do more with less, employees are scrambling just to keep up, and every human on the planet is “busy.” The problem is that you can’t be efficient with humans, because they have “emotions” and “feelings.” And in a knowledge economy, those emotions impact our ability to do work. But it turns out there’s a missing skill they don’t teach in business school that can leverage those emotions to increase effectiveness: humor. When employees proactively find ways to enjoy what they do, their productivity increases, engagement soars, and turnover drops. In this talk, Andrew Tarvin, the world’s first Humor Engineer, reverse-engineers the process of using humor to get better results while having more fun.

The sad clown is a well-established cultural trope, but it’s also a psychologically verified part of the human condition. Humor is a coping skill rooted in resilience. When people have something to overcome it makes sense that they might become more adept at laughing through the pain. A large body of research suggests that resilience acts as a buffer for pain and this quality is strongly associated with creativity. In this video I attempt to answer the question: Does Trauma Make Us Funny?
