TV Interview: Beijing Travel Ideas, China | Places to Eat and Things to Do – The Big Bus

Welcome to The Big Bus tour and travel guide's YouTube channel.

Adam Ford, editor of The Big Bus tour and travel guide, regularly joins the team at Sky News Business Class to discuss top travel destinations around the world. In this interview Adam provides tips for visiting the Chinese capital Beijing, and suggestions for places to stay and things to do.

Australia‘s fortunes seem inextricably tied to those of China. They’re our biggest trading partner, but how much do most of us really know about the country and its culture? Well, if you’ve ever wanted to find out more but you’re not sure where to begin, a fact-finding mission to the capital Beijing is an excellent starting point.

Despite the fact that the equivalent of almost the entire population of Australia lives in this mega-metropolis (there are 22 million people no less in the Greater Beijing region), you’ll find Beijing a surprisingly charming and laid-back urban centre, where the locals are unfailingly polite, the city is seriously spick and span, and a sense of history seeps from every crevice.

How to be a Chinese Tourist | 101 East

From setting fire to curtains inside an aeroplane cabin and hurling scalding noodles over a flight attendant to urinating in public places, Chinese tourists have gained a bad reputation.

One in 10 travellers world-wide is from China.

Outside of Asia, their destination of choice is France.

Despite complaints from locals, officials in Paris want to double the number of Chinese visitors to five million a year.

101 East asks what it will take to turn the plane loads of first-time travellers from China into well behaved sightseers.

In this Chinese Street Food tour video, I'm going to take you on a food street journey to many delicious, mouthwatering street food places around Beijing, AKA Peking, in Northern China. If you're thinking about traveling to China for the street food, make sure to come visit Beijing. You can enjoy unique Chinese street foods hidden in Beijing's Hutong Alleyways and try some classic Chinese cuisine favorites like Peking duck AKA Beijing duck, Jian bing ( 煎饼) AKA Chinese crepes, and a ton of other hidden specialties.
In the past 3 years, I've shot and eaten street food around China, including locations like Chengdu, Lanzhou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Wuhan, Leshan, Shanghai, and Xinjiang's Silk Road. So far, the street food in each of these locations has been the best street food around the world!

Chinese cuisine is so fantastic, it would really take a lifetime to eat all of it. I consider myself super lucky and fortunate to be able to live in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, eating Sichuan food and sampling food across the whole country whenever I get the chance. I've decided to stay living in China for another year or two or even more, shooting delicious street food in china for you and across asia as well!

Here are the addresses and locations and restaurant names for the Chinese street food I had in this Beijing travel video. Most locations were deep in Beijing's Hutong alleyways!

1) Famous beijing breakfast Jianbing - AKA Chinese Crepe
北京市东城区大兴胡同内。
2) Delicious Sesame butter porridge made from millet AKA Miancha:
北京市东城区南大兴胡同7号
3) Very stinky Douzhi fermented green bean porridge (even stinkier than stinky tofu!)
北京市东城区天坛北门对面老磁器口豆汁店
4) Organ soup and specialty Beijing zhajiang noodles AKA Zhajiangmian!
北京市东城区东四北大街141号老北京百年卤煮店
5) Beijing Duck / Peking duck!

Assignment: China - The Week That Changed The World

Richard Nixon's visit to China in February 1972 changed the course of history — reshaping the global balance of power and opening the door to the establishment of relations between the People's Republic and the United States.

It was also a milestone in the history of journalism. Since the Communist revolution of 1949, a suspicious regime in Beijing had barred virtually all U.S. reporters from China. For the Nixon trip, however, the Chinese agreed to accept nearly 100 journalists, and to allow the most dramatic events — Nixon's arrival in Beijing, Zhou Enlai's welcoming banquet, visits to the Great Wall and the Forbidden City — to be televised live.

Classroom use of this video is permitted. We would appreciate feedback from viewers. Please write to us at uschina@usc.edu.

The coverage was arguably as important as the details of the diplomacy. It profoundly transformed American and international perceptions of a long-isolated China, generated the public support Nixon needed to change U.S. policy, and laid the groundwork for Beijing's gradual move to open China to greater international media coverage.

While the outlines of the Nixon trip are familiar, the behind-the-scenes story of how that momentous event was covered is much less well-known. This segment of Assignment: China focuses on journalists who went with Nixon and includes interviews with those officials who sought to shape the coverage. The Week that Changed the World contains previously unreleased footage of the Nixon visit, as well as interviews with journalistic luminaries such as Dan Rather and Bernard Kalb of CBS, Ted Koppel and Tom Jarriel of ABC, Barbara Walters of NBC, Max Frankel of the New York Times, Stanley Karnow of the Washington Post, and many others.

Reported and narrated by U.S.-China Institute Senior Fellow Mike Chinoy, formerly CNN's Senior Asia Correspondent and Beijing Bureau Chief, and edited by USCI Multimedia Editor Craig Stubing, the film offers a fascinating and previously untold perspective on one of the most important historical moments of the 20th century. Clayton Dube conceived of the Assignment: China project and supervises it.

Clinical Management of Infection-Related GN (Part 2)

The Silk Road: A brief history by Major Gordon Corrigan MBE

Initially a conduit for the export of silk from China to the West in 2nd Century BC, the Silk Road as it was later coined, quickly developed into a network of trading roads and tracks, linking the empires of China, India and Persia with the West, stretching some four thousand miles. It not only enabled the exchange of raw and manufactured trade goods, but the exchange of religions, philosophies and even the Black Death in the 14th Century.
In this online lecture, Major Gordon Corrigan MBE reveals the extraordinary history of the ancient trading route, which is now largely traversed by train as opposed to camel.

The Travel Agents Guide To Beijing! (Part 1)

When I planned my trip to China earlier this year, the single place I was most excited to visit was Beijing. There was so much history in this city - things I never thought I’d see (the GREAT WALL OF CHINA!) - that I couldn’t contain my excitement. When I arrived, Beijing did not disappoint - it lived up to everything I was hoping for, and I only wish I could have stayed longer. Here is part one of my trip to Beijing. I hope you’ll enjoy this episode as the subject is truly wonderful. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Great Wall of China Day Tour - Beijing Layover

China's order on travel agencies to stop selling tour packages to Korea takes effect

중 오늘부터 자국민 한국 단체관광 금지, 항공편 축소
China's order to stop selling group tour packages to South Korea is set to come into force today.
The policy from Beijing comes hot on the heels of a stream of economic retaliation against Seoul's decision to deploy a U.S. anti-missile system on South Korean soil.
Lee Unshin has more.

The nation's biggest airlines,... Korean Air and Asiana Airlines,... have announced the cancellation of nearly one-hundred flights each between Korea and China for the period covering mid-March to April, following a slump in bookings from China.
And numerous cruise ships departing China said Wednesday that they're now skipping Korean ports, despite previous plans to stop by.
Korea's been seeing the number of Chinese visitors plunge for weeks now... following Beijing's series of economic orders to limit spending in Korea.
And starting on March 15th, no more group vacation packages to Korea will be found at Chinese travel agencies.. be it brick and mortar stores or online,... as a policy to stop selling the tours comes into effect.
According to reports, China's tourism administration has also issued a statement, saying companies not following the rules are liable to be fined or have their licenses revoked.

The measure came sooner than we expected. I suppose we'll have to focus on accommodating individual Chinese tourists for the time being.

Beijing has been strongly against Seoul's decision to deploy the U.S. missile defense system known as THAAD.., claiming the system's technology could be used to spy on its military.
It has focused its protests on the cultural and economic fronts,... by pulling the plug on Korean events, and even banning shipments of cosmetics from Korea.
There are reports even more unofficial measures are in the works as well.
As of now,... numerous local companies long reliant on Chinese tourist dollars,... are hoping to weather the storm by marketing more travel products for visitors from Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

According to reports, China's tourism administration has also issued a statement, saying companies not following the rules are liable to be fined or have their licenses revoked.
This means that henceforth, only Chinese tourists who book their own trip and obtain their own visa will be able to come to the nation.
But this is only one part of the economic retaliation China has been waging on Korea.
Seoul-Beijing relations started fraying last year when South Korea announced its decision to deploy the U.S. missile defense system known as THAAD on its soil.
Beijing has been strongly against the move, claiming the system's technology could be used to spy on its military.
It focused its protests to the cultural and economic fronts,... by pulling the plug on Korean events, and even banning shipments of cosmetics from Korea.
And the plunge in the number of Chinese visitors is already having severe economic consequences on Korea.
Due to a slump in bookings from China, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have had to cancel nearly one-hundred flights each between mid-March and April.
Numerous local companies, long reliant on Chinese tourist dollars,... are hoping to weather the storm by marketing more travel products for visitors from Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
