It is the world's most mysterious manuscript. A book, written by an unknown author, illustrated with pictures that are as bizarre as they are puzzling -- and written in a language that even the best cryptographers have been unable to decode. No wonder that this script even has a part in Dan Brown's latest bestseller The Lost Symbol.

Analysis of the Voynich code

Brazilian physicists used their own text analysis technique to study the Voynich manuscript, a mysterious book supposedly written in early 15th century in an unknown alphabet. The expectation is to help deciphering this text, one of the most enigmatic known.
Through advanced statistical tools, physicist Diego Amâncio, from the University of São Paulo at São Carlos, seeks to discover if the manuscript is a coherent text or just a random jumble of meaningless symbols, as some researchers defend. I analyse the text without knowing the words, I am interested in the organization of the text, he says.

Voynich Manuscript: The World's Most Mysterious Book

The Voynich Manuscript has been dubbed the most mysterious book in the world. Many code breakers have tried and failed to decipher the strange language contained in the book.

Subscribe for more:

The manuscript consists of over 170,000 unknown symbols and illustrations, but an alphabet of 20-30 symbols would account for much of the text.

At first glance, the illustrations look like plants, but curiously most of them don’t really match known species. The illustrations shed little light on the precise nature of the text, but seem to indicate that the book is split up into six sections. There are many theories regarding the subject matter of the book. The Voynich Manuscript may have served medicinal purposes, or perhaps contain information related to cosmology.

Wilfrid Voynich first discovered the Voynich Manuscript in 1912, but the book dates to the early 15th century (making it pretty ancient). For context, other events around this time were Machu Picchu being constructed, Guru Nanak was born and Columbus landed in the Americas.

Feuding warlords in Italy were known to use cryptography to keep their messages a secret. At the time, there was a codes arms race, which explains why the Voynich Manuscript is so hard to crack.

Some people have obsessed over the book and spent their entire lives trying to decode the mystery. Even American and British code breakers from World War’s 1 and 2 were stumped. This has led some to believe that the book is a hoax.

A popular theory is that a well-known alchemist in fact wrote the book at the time. However, rather than filling the book with real information he instead had the book created to look ancient and full of wisdom. This would give the illusion to his patrons that he was basing his assumptions of their health on something concrete. This would mean that both types of theorists are technically correct. While the book doesn’t contain any real information, it was still willfully created and served a purpose.

One of the symbols contained in the Voynich Manuscript is present in three other codes from that time. While the language has some similarities to European languages it varies in several important ways. Some letters appear in every single word. The distribution of letters within words is rather peculiar as well. Some appear only at the beginning, some only at the end, while others always appear in the middle section. The book is also more repetitive than European languages. Sometimes the same common word appears up to three times in a row. This would be the English equivalent of saying “the, the, the”.

My personal favorite theory is that the book was written by aliens and left for humans to find. Perhaps the book contains vast knowledge of the intricate workings of the universe, and even some secrets about life here on Earth. This book definitely needs to be the subject of a sci-fi film ASAP!

129-The Voynich Manuscript

In 1912, bookseller Wilfrid Voynich discovered an illustrated manuscript that was written in a mysterious alphabet that had never been seen before. The text bears the hallmarks of natural language, but no one has ever been able to determine its meaning. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll learn about the Voynich manuscript, which has been bewildering scholars for more than a century.

We'll also ponder some parliamentary hostages and puzzle over a tormenting acquisition.

In 1851, George Merryweather invented the Tempest Prognosticator, a rack of bottled leeches who would ring a bell when a storm approached.

Between 1884 and 1896, visitors to Coney Island could stay in a 31-room hotel shaped like an elephant.
