Self-Discipline | Why It’s Important & How to Master Self-Control

Self-discipline and willpower are two of the biggest secrets to success. Improving, cultivating, and growing your self-control and self-discipline will serve you well in both your personal and professional life.

Discipline is important because it allows us to live our lives the way we want. As a student, discipline allows you to study more effectively and use your time efficiently. Willpower and self-control allow you to eat healthier, exercise regularly, and be happier. This translates to stronger grades in school, more energy, improved moods, and looking and feeling better.

Best Dark Chocolate Ever:

The Ego-Depletion model of self-control states that our willpower reserves are finite and limited. Therefore, it is imperative you harness your discipline wisely.

Three steps to cultivating self-discipline:
1. Start Small
2. Practice Daily
3. Ramp it Up

Other Tips:
1. Make it easier for your future self
2. Build the appropriate reward and consequence systems
3. Doing What You Love is some of the most misunderstood and misguided advice. Instead grow to love the process.

**Let us know how you plan to improve your discipline in the comments below!**

A workout for your self-control: Jordan Silberman at TEDxFlourCity

Neuroeconomist Jordan Silberman describes how an EEG tied to a simple visual feedback system can allow its users to exercise and improve their everyday ability to exact self-control.

Jordan Silberman is graduate student of medicine and psychology at the University of Rochester, where he studies neuroeconomics

Jordan will be telling us about the neurological basis of self-control; he suggests that we think about it in a new way. Self-control can be trained and fatigued, much like a muscle. Jordan will describe an EEG biofeedback training system that enables people to 'flex' the neural substrate of self-control.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

TEDxWoodsHole - Dan Ariely - Temptations and Self-Control

One of the challenges of human life is what's good for us in the long term often doesn't seem good for us right now. Dieting, for example, is not so much fun now, but good for the future; the same goes for saving money or submitting to preventive medical tests. When we face such tradeoffs, we often focus on the short term rather than our long-terms goals, and in the process we get ourselves into trouble. But wait! There is hope. By understanding where we fall short, there are methods we can use to overcome our natural (and less than desirable) inclinations.

Using simple experiments, Dan Ariely studies how people actually act in the marketplace, as opposed to how they should or would perform if they were completely rational. His interests span a wide range of daily behaviors and his experiments are consistently interesting, amusing, and informative, demonstrating profound ideas that fly in the face of common wisdom. Dan is the author of the New York Times Bestseller Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions and of The Upside of Irrationality: The Unexpected Ways We Defy Logic at Work and at Home. Ariely is the James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University.
