Top 3 Programming Languages in 2019 (for beginners)

Ex-Google Tech Lead gives you his top 3 programming language picks for 2019 for new software engineers. Learn computer science, math, science, and algorithms at (first 200 get 20% off premium).

There are multiple paths to becoming a software engineer, and I think that they will differ somewhat between the traditional route (through college) or the self-taught route. I think it's especially interesting to consider what a decent self-taught route might look like, since that path isn't well-established. What's a good language to start with, and from there where can you go and how can you ramp up your experience? We discuss web-development, Javascript, HTML, CSS, Python, PHP, C#, C++, and mobile development involving iOS (Swift/Objective-C) and Android (Kotlin/Java).

I know I'll probably get some haters on this video, especially from the backend folks who think web development isn't real. Primarily, I think the visual interface aspect of web is essential to keep programming fun & engaging, which few other languages easily support right out of the box. To add to that, web is incredibly useful with plenty of job opportunities. From there, one can branch into a variety of other areas.

How would you begin to teach programming to someone? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Top 3 Programming Languages in 2019

With the landscape of technology always changing, it can be challenging to keep up. No worries though, Caleb has your back (I don't know why I am typing in 3rd person)! No fluff, just straight to the facts.

Special thank you to IBM Call for Code for supporting this video. They are doing great work to help this world in times of natural disasters:

Need more Coding Practice? Why not try Pluralsight? I used Pluralsight to step up my game in my software development job. You should too!

Blockchain Explained with Carolyn Rogers (IBM Blockchain Platform) -

SQL stands for structured query language and is an essential language for a software engineer or software developer. This is the language used to communicate with relational databases. It seems there is a new NoSQL database every day, and learning SQL is a good foundation to being able to pick up these new databases (such as document databases and graph databases).

Solidity is a programming language used to create smart contracts (digital agreements) on the Ethereum blockchain. This in addition to chaincode and Hyperledger Fabric are topics I hope to master in 2019.

Lastly, we have the good ol' Java. Aint nothing special here. That being said, Java is one of the most widely used programming languages (and for good reason). This is the best language to have as your default language. You know, the language you think in.

Top 10 Programming Languages You Should Learn This Year - Best Programming Languages of 2018

Current project: - Education collaborative platform

Connect with me on LinkedIn!

Here is my list of the top 10 programming languages of 2018!

I constantly see on forums and message boards questions from newer programmers on what language they should take a look at. I did some research about many languages and these are what I came up with based on three main criteria points that can be rewarded up to 5 stars each.

The first point is Community. I think that the community surrounding a language is very important when it comes to first learning a language and then progressing once you actually start developing in it.

Two things I really took into account for community was the amount of activity each language has on StackOverFlow and the amount of pulls each language had on github. I know each language has their own smaller sites for help but I tried to stay with the big sites where I could find specific numbers.

The second point is Future. If you were to learn a new language and put a large amount of time into, you want to make sure it is worth it down the road. I looked at how much each language grew year over year on github pulls and then the trajectory of the % of questions on StackOverFlow.

The last point is Jobs. Always want to make as much money as you can with what you know! I took into account the amount of programmers who say they know each language and the amount of companies that have openings for each language.

And of course the average amount of money stackoverflow reported for a position with that langauge.

These three points I think give a great view on how well each language is doing and will do in 2018.
