Police bodycam footage shows Gabby Petito, fiancé pulled over before her disappearance

Utah police have released body camera footage from Aug. 12 that shows Gabby Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie talking to officers after being pulled over, a month before she was reported missing.

The 22-year-old woman was declared missing by her family on Sept. 11. Laundrie is refusing to speak to police about what happened after he returned home early from their months-long road trip across the United States, in an adventure that they had documented on Instagram and YouTube.

In the video, police were responding to a domestic abuse call when they pulled over the couple's white van outside Arches National Park in Moab. Petito appeared distressed and emotional, telling officers that she and Laundrie had a fight that morning.

Petito admits to officers that she slapped Laundrie repeatedly as well as caused him to be distracted while driving. Laundrie later tells officers he locked her outside of the car at one point because she had, in his opinion, become too agitated.

Police in North Port, Fla., have confiscated the couple’s van and are treating Laundrie as a person of interest in the case. The search is still ongoing for Petito.

Viewer note: The hour-long bodycam footage released by police was condensed for brevity.

Gabby Petito describes fight with Brian Laundrie in newly-released body camera video

Newly-released body camera footage from the Moab City Police Department more clearly shows Gabby Petito describe a fight with Brian Laundrie while on their cross-country road trip.

In the video, the officer asks the 22-year-old to describe what happened between her and Laundrie prior to their arrival.

Petito explains she was stressed out and straightening up the van since she deals with OCD. While talking to the officer, she says she was apologizing to Laundrie who, she adds, was frustrated with her.

At some point, Petito says he locked her out and told her to go take a breather.

The officer then asks her: Is there something on your cheek here? He appears to be referencing what looks like a scratch on Petito's face.

The officer's attention then goes to her arm and shoulder area where he asks her about additional markings he spotted. In the video, Petito appears hesitant before responding with, oh yeah, I don't know.

An I'm not sure followed suit once the officer attempts to ask her again.

As the video continues, Petito can be heard telling the officer that she hit him first because Laundrie was telling her to shut up.

Laundrie's reaction to that was to grab her arm and face, according to Petito's account to police. She then specifies that Laundrie did not punch her in the face.
