Vijayanagar Empire - Hampi | Medieval Indian History | NCERT Video | medieval history | UPSC | PCS |

It was the only Hindu Kingdom founded by Harihara and Bukka, during the times of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq when Sultan was at the stage of downfall and many revolts took place in Kampili. Harihara and Bukka were feudatories of Warangal King Pratap Rudra Dev II
In 1323, MBT destroyed Warangal and during this time Harihara and Bukka went to Kampili to assist Kampil Dev and became ministers there. When the power of Sultan became weak, they revolted and they were reconverted into Hinduism by their Guru Vidhyaranya. So they founded Vidyanagar Kingdom after the name of their Guru which later became ‘Vijaynagar’.
They started ‘Sangam Dynasty’ after the name of their father Sangam.

Timur Lang, the Turk, swooped down from the north and smashed up the Delhi Sultanate. After this terrible affliction, North India remained weak and divided into small potentates. But South India was comparatively well off with Vijaynagar as the largest and most powerful of the southern kingdoms. This state and the city attracted many Hindu refugees from the north. From contemporary accounts, it appears that the city was incredibly rich and beautiful. Said Abdur-Razzak, a traveller from Central Asia: The city is such that eye has not seen nor ear heard of any palace resembling it upon the whole earth. There were arcades and magnificent galleries for the bazaars, and rising above them all was the palace of the king, surrounded by many rivulets and streams flowing through channels of cut stone. In the widespread kingdom, many temples were built with the king emerging to represent godhead. The haughty Kalinga prince’s duel with the Malaysian swordsman resulted in the former’s defeat, followed by suicide. Bijapur’s recalcitrant rebel Adil Khan is subjugated. The ageing king was taken ill and his attempts to fix the succession issue prove futile, with the vast empire showing signs of decay. Even when the Deccan kings began teaming up among themselves, the sprawling empire refused to read the signs on the wall.

The Medieval history of India is a vast topic which students generally feel difficult to cover and moreover the complete notes for ancient history for IAS exam and other State civil services exam is very less available on internet and students generally feel boredom to cover it from internet. So in this video, I have tried to make the concepts interesting with the help of interesting stories associated with different empires, civilizations and persons. I have used my own personal and class notes so that the students who are not getting IAS or UPSC or PSC coaching from anywhere can take advantage from my videos. I hope the video will benefit to all the students who are preparing for any kind of competitive examination especially UPSC and State Civil services. Vijaynagara - Hampi Documentary

Hampi! Now what should i talk about this!!

Stunning, Jaw dropping, Astonishing, Flabbergasting!
Words cannot describe the experience within Hampi..

Hampi is a historic city on the banks of Tungabhadra river which was a capital of Vijaynagara empire. Vijaynagara literally means the city of victory. That's largest Hindu empire the world has ever seen..
When an empire is hindu, it is indulged in arts, commerce, trade, well being.

Hampi offers a lot to architecture & history buffs. Those monuments have potential to rival Rome. Hats off to Archaeological survey of India who has made conscious efforts in restoration work of monuments..

All glory days have an end. The end to Vijaynagara's glories was abrupt. Overconfidence of its leaders lead to its demise. The muslim confederacy razed this beautiful city to dust. And then it was ignored. An haunted city which after decades was buried under banana plantation fields.

I wish to take you through this journey through this video.
I hope you enjoy it!

This is Hampi - The Jewel Of Vijayanagara Empire - In 4K

A video from my last road trip. We explored the UNESCO world heritage sites of Hampi in Karnataka, INDIA.

Hampi is located within the ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was one of the richest and largest cities in the world during its prime. In around 1500 AD Vijaynagar had about 500,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the world after Beijing, CHINA.

During our 1000 km road trip from Bangalore, we explored sights which are straight out of story books.

Hampi - History of vijayanagar empire

The History of Vijayanagar Empire

The typical version Hampi?s history starts with a popular folklore. Two local chieftains, Hakka & Bukka , reports to their guru an unusual sight they saw during a hunting expedition. A hare chased by their hound suddenly turns courageous and start chasing back the hound.
Vidyaranya, the guru, tells them that the place is so special and asks them to establish theirs local capital at this place. The seed of an empire was sown.
Over the next 200 plus years (1336 AD 1565 AD) four dynasties ruled Vijayanagar .
History of Vijayanagar?s had been a saga of resistance against the northern Sultanates as well as building of its spectacular capital in Hampi.
The capital was one major trading center. Anything from horses to gems was traded in Hampi. Art and architecture found its special place in Hampi. The rulers were great patrons of art and religion. Most of the kings associated names of their favorite gods with their names. Some of the kings were renowned for their ambitious projects.
King Krishnadeva Raya (1509-1529 AD) of the Tuluva Dynasty stands tall among the rest. During his regime the empire saw its peak.
By this time Vijayanagara Empire covered the whole of south India and beyond.
The Krishna Temple that you can visit in Hampi was commissioned by him to commemorate the victory over the Gajapathi kings of Utkala (in present day Orissa state).
The warring Deccan Sultanates could finally join together to defeat the Vijayanagara army at Talarikota, a place north of Hampi.
Vijayanagar army suffered heavy losses. The capital city was plundered, its population massacred. Treasure hunters ransacked its palaces and temples for months. Kings lost, capital fallen, population fled, Hampi turned into a ghost city. For centuries Hampi remained as a neglected place. This erstwhile metropolitan with more than half a million population slowly turned into a jungle where wild animals roamed freely.
The area came under many kings from time to time with the flow of history. But it was no more considered strategic and hence neglected.
A batch of school students at Virupaksha Temple
During the colonial period, Hampi evoked some curiosity among the western archeologists. Robert Sewell?s (1845-1925), seminal work aptly titled as A Forgotten Empire :Vijayanagar was a major attempt to narrate the empire that was. In 1917 A.H. Longhurst?s Hampi Ruins Described and Illustrated became the first travel guide for the visitors to Hampi. UNESCO?s World Heritage Site was conferred to Hampi in 1986.
Currently Hampi's monuments hundreds of them are popular among tourists, pilgrims and the area is one of the exotic locations for the Bollywood and local film shootings. Jackie Chan film ?Myth? was shot in the Hampi.

Rise and Fall of the Vijayanagar Empire | History of Medieval India

The history of the Vijayanagar Empire -- and Hampi -- is diverse, complex, and rife with brutal opportunism. This in-depth look at Vijayanagar Empire history brings to light a dramatic narrative that has been ignored for far too long. Starting from the beginning, we'll go all the way through to Krishnadevaraya and Ramaraya, and that disastrous battle: Talikota.

Whether you’re visiting the UNESCO Heritage Site at Hampi, playing EU4, or just curious about this iconic empire, I hope you enjoy this exploration of the Rise and Fall of the Vijayanagar Empire. I have made efforts to offer a more nuanced overview than what can typically be found online.

THE VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE HISTORY

Referred as the Kingdom of Bisnaga by the Portuguese, Vijayanagara was a South Indian empire based in the Deccan Plateau. Established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I, it lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates. The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagara, whose impressive ruins surround modern Hampi, now a World Heritage Site in modern Karnataka, India. Never To Be Forgotten Emperor | Part 1 | Vijayanagara Empire History | Aravidu Dynasty | Venkatapati

#vijayanagara #history #anveshi #documentary

In the second half of 16th century, the Vijayanagara Empire has suffered from several rude shocks. A major military defeat on the battle field of Talikota in 1565, the deaths of two supreme commanders – Aliya Ramaraya and Venkatadri and the total destruction of their capital city – Hampi, have devastated the Empire beyond measures.

The mysterious flight of the surviving commander Tirumalaraya from Hampi along with the puppet emperor Sadashiva has further worsened the morale of the might Empire.

Even after Tirumalaraya set up the Empire’s capital at Penugonda he was not spared from the attacks of his enemies. His short rule of 3 years has witnessed continuous loss of Vijayanagara territories.

The glorious Vijayanagara Empire was thus sliding towards its destruction, dissolution and dismemberment. The Empire was in need of a savior who can turn the tide, who can restore the glory and reinforce the dwindling glimmer of hope.

Who is he?

Watch The Never To Be Forgotten Emperor documentary series that presents the achievements of a Vijayanagara Emperor whose contributions have not been acknowledged as they must have been.

NOTE: Tirumalaraya is the father of Venkata-II. But erranously described as grandfather. Team Anveshi regrets this mistake.

Hampi : The Vijayanagara Empire - Part 1

Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century.

Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.

History Of India - Vijayanagara Kingdom - Krishnadevaraya

The Vijayanagara Empire (also called Karnata Empire), referred to as the Kingdom of Bisnegar by the Portuguese, was an empire based in South India, in the Deccan Plateau region. It was established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I of Sangama Dynasty. The empire rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the southern powers to ward off Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century. It lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates. The empire is named after its capital city of Vijayanagara, whose ruins surround present day Hampi, now a World Heritage Site in Karnataka, India. The writings of medieval European travelers such as Domingo Paes, Fernão Nunes and Niccolò Da Conti, and the literature in local languages provide crucial information about its history. Archaeological excavations at Vijayanagara have revealed the empire's power and wealth.

The empire's legacy includes many monuments spread over South India, the best known of which is the group at Hampi. The previous temple building traditions in South India came together in the Vijayanagara Architecture style. The mingling of all faiths and vernaculars inspired architectural innovation of Hindu temple construction, first in the Deccan and later in the Dravidian idioms using the local granite. Efficient administration and vigorous overseas trade brought new technologies such as water management systems for irrigation. The empire's patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The Vijayanagara Empire created an epoch in South Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Hinduism as a unifying factor. -------

Battle of Talikota, also called as Battle of Rakkasi-Tangadi, is the decisive battle fought in Common Era 1565 between Vijayanagara Empire and the Confederacy of Islamic sultanates of Deccan.

It was on 26th of January, 1565 that this fateful battle was fought between the Vijayanagara and a confederacy of four Muslim Sultanates i.e. Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Bidar and Golconda. It was on this day’s afternoon that the fate of both Ramaraya and Hampi would get decided forever.

Let us rejoice the Republic Day celebrations but let us also shed few drops of tears for all those valiant Hindu warriors who laid down their lives for the protection of the culture, tradition, language and every symbol of their ancient heritage.
