WATCH LIVE: President Biden meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin

President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin have begun their high-stakes summit at an 18th century villa on the banks of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, the final event of Biden’s first foreign trip as commander in chief.

Both U.S. and Russian officials have downplayed expectations from the meeting, which is expected to last four to five hours, but could go longer, a senior Biden Administration official told reporters Tuesday on Air Force One. Putin and Biden will hold separate press conferences following their meeting.

Live: President Joe Biden & Russia's Putin meeting at Geneva summit

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a meeting at Parc 'La Grange' villa in Geneva on Wednesday.

The two leaders are set to meet for crunch talks for the first time since Biden was sworn in as president in January.

The pair are expected to talk about US concerns on Russian sabre-rattling on the Ukrainian border, the imprisonment of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, and Putin's support for Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko.

Washington has repeatedly accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 and 2020 US elections.

Earlier this year, Biden blacklisted six Russian technology companies for carrying out Russian government-directed attempts to influence the 2020 US presidential election, and other acts of disinformation and interference.

However, Putin called for the US and Russia to work together to fight cyberattacks, saying: It is our great hope that we will be able to set up this process with our US partners.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding a press conference after meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in Geneva, Switzerland.

Biden will hold a separate press conference following Putin’s remarks.

On Tuesday, a Kremlin aide said nuclear stability, climate change and cybersecurity were on the agenda for the summit, Reuters reported, as well as the outlook for Russian and U.S. nationals imprisoned in each other’s countries.

Nonetheless, the aide said he was not sure any agreements could be reached.

The meeting between Biden and Putin comes on the heels of Biden’s first international trip as president, where he reaffirmed alliances with G-7 leaders and NATO allies. The American president is expected to strike a different tone with his Russian counterpart compared to his predecessor Donald Trump.

In full: Biden-Putin summit: US and Russia leaders depart

US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin square up on Wednesday for their first meeting since Mr Biden took office with deep disagreements likely and expectations low for any breakthroughs.

Both have said they hope their talks in a lakeside Geneva villa can lead to more stable and predictable relations, even though they remain at odds over everything from arms control and cyber-hacking to election interference and Ukraine.

The two are expected to talk for four or five hours starting at around 1.30 p.m. (1230 BST).

They are then expected to hold separate press conferences.

President Joe Biden holds news conference after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he and U.S. President Joe Biden agreed in a “constructive” summit Wednesday to return their nations' ambassadors to their posts and begin negotiations to replace the last remaining treaty between the two countries limiting nuclear weapons.

Putin said there was “no hostility” during the talks that wrapped up more quickly than expected.

The two sides had said they expected to meet for four to five hours but spent less than three hours together, including an opening meeting with just the two presidents and each one's top foreign aide.

When it was over, Putin had the first crack at describing the results at a solo news conference, with Biden to follow with his own session with reporters.
