WATCH: Jack Brewer’s full speech at the Republican National Convention | 2020 RNC Night 3

Former NFL player Jack Brewer spoke on the third night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 26, 2020. Brewer said that African Americans have benefited from Trump’s leadership in the White House, and pushed back on reporting about the president’s reaction to white supremacists and alt-right protesters who provoked violence in Charlottesville in 2017. You're going to allow the media to lie to you by falsely claiming that he said there were 'very fine white supremacists' in Charlottesville, Brewer asked. The president did say that there were “very fine people, on both sides,” at the events in Charlottesville, adding, “you had a lot of people in that group that were there to innocently protest, and very legally protest.” He received blowback for condoning violence, particularly because a peaceful 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, was killed by a white supremacist while at that protest. Brewer also said that Biden and Harris were responsible for locking up “countless” Black Americans for nonviolent crimes. Biden has been criticized by criminal justice activists for helping to write the 1994 crime bill -- which some say led to higher levels of mass incarceration -- and last year apologized for some aspects of his anti-crime legislation. Harris has been criticized for what some say was a “tough on crime” stance when she served as California's Attorney General, but when she ran for president this year, proposed a plan to scale back incarceration and end the death penalty, among other measures.

Sen. Tim Scott 2020 Republican National Convention: full speech

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott says he is living the American dream and cites “the evolution of the Southern heart” as the reason he, as a Black man, was able to win a primary election against a son of Strom Thurmond.

Scott, the only Black GOP senator, was the closing speaker at the Republican National Convention on Monday. He recounted growing up in a single-parent household and failing out of ninth grade before finding a mentor and becoming a small-business owner.

The senator says any insinuation that America has gone backward is false. He talked about his 2010 primary win against Paul Thurmond, son of the segregationist senator, in a congressional race.

He says, “In an overwhelmingly white district, the voters judged me not on the color of my skin but on the content of my character.” He says, “We live in a world that only wants you to believe in the bad news, racially economically and culturally polarizing news.”

Scott says America isn’t “fully where we want to be.” But he says, “I thank God almighty we are not where we used to be.”

WATCH: Clarence Henderson’s full speech at the Republican National Convention | 2020 RNC Night 3

Clarence Henderson, civil rights activist and president of the North Carolina chapter of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, spoke on the third night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 26, 2020. Henderson praised Trump for providing funding to historically black colleges and universities and for signing criminal justice legislation that freed inmates, claiming that 91 percent of them were Black people. In 2018 Trump signed the First Step Act, one of the most significant pieces of legislation aimed at criminal justice reform in years. Among other things, the bill takes steps to ease mandatory minimum sentences under federal law and reduce the sentencing disparities retroactively for crack cocaine and powder cocaine that disproportionately affected Black communities. A U.S. Sentencing Commission report found that 91.3 percent of those who received sentencing reductions under this new provision were Black, but it did not necessarily release them from prison.
On HBCUS, last year Trump signed a bill to permanently provide $250 million a year to HBCUs and other institutions that serve large populations of minority students, after funding lapsed. The Congressional CARES Act, signed by Trump in March as a coronavirus relief effort, also provided about $1.4 billion in emergency funding to HBCUS and minority serving institutions.
