Therapy isn’t for people who feel “crazy” or are having a mental health crisis. People seek counseling for many reasons. If you’re unsure as to whether or not you should see a therapist, remember: there is no “should.” If you want to meet with a therapist, that’s something you can do to see if it feels right to you. Remember that there are many online counselors and therapists available and you have to search to find the right fit for your needs.

Are you unsure if therapy is right for you? Here are some questions to ask yourself:

• It there a problem that you can’t seem to get out of your mind? Are you unable to do everyday activities such as go to work, hang out with friends or enjoy a movie or TV show because you can’t stop obsessing?

• Is there something that you are embarrassed about to the point where you are actively attempting to hide it from the important people in your life? Does this secret cause you shame or feelings of distress?

• In the past couple of months, has your mood been noticeably low? Are you isolating from friends and family because you “don’t see the point of being around people?” Are you avoiding phone calls, text messages, and emails because you don’t want to talk to anyone?

• Are you addicted to a substance, behavior or compulsion? Does this addiction significantly impact your life to the point where it feels nearly impossible to get through the day without engaging in the action or using the substance?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you would benefit from consulting with a therapist. Remember therapy can help a variety of different people for many various reasons. There’s no harm in talking to a licensed counselor to see if they may be able to help you.

What should you expect when making your first therapy appointment? What will they ask me? Do I need to fill out paperwork? When do we talk about cost and payment? I try to give you all the information you will need to be prepared to make and attend your first therapy appointment.
The most important thing to remember is that the sooner we reach out for help the better! There is no reason for us to suffer alone when there are many people out there who have dedicated their lives to helping others work through their issues.
Also, know that if you don't like the therapist or feel like you click with them, you do NOT have to make another appointment! It may take you a few tried to find the therapist who is right for you. So please don't give up! You are worth it! xo

If I had it to do over again, I would have stopped going to therapy long before I did. Most commenters on this channel told me they felt the same way; a few were astonished and wanted to know more. Conversion therapy is the practice of curing gay people by trying to turn them straight through counseling and lifestyle restrictions.

In this special report, VICE gets exclusive access to one of the hundreds of gay-conversion-therapy organizations, groups, and sessions in the United States. At the Journey into Manhood program, men pay more than $600 to attend a weekend retreat where they participate in exercises and activities the staff members claim will help them battle their same-sex ­orientation. The only qualification to become a staff member is to have successfully completed the program.

The report meets with the founder of reparative therapy, Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, who is illegally practicing on minors in the State of California, and investigates the controversial legal battle to fight conversion therapy for individuals under 18 years of age. We also travel to the annual Gay Christian Network Conference, speak with former ex-gay leaders including John Smid of Love in Action, who is now married to his gay partner, and hear the grueling stories of the individuals who have survived this brutal practice.
