In this video I discuss my personal starting salary as an engineer right out of college as well as my expenses. Of course these numbers are unique to me and will different a lot from person to person and especially country to country.

When you looking at your savings it's important to not think you can afford spending that much every month on extra expenses. Especially for those in their 20's, it's important you save up for the likely possibility of buying a house and starting a family down the road.

My Starting Salary: $76,560/year
Salary after Taxes/401k: $46,335/year ($3861.25/month)
Expenses: $2963/month
Savings: $900/month

Specifics from above numbers are listed in the video.

How Much do Engineers and Scientists Make? Salary and Employment Statistics

Two common statistics that are helpful to know about any college major are: how much money you can expect to make, and the amount of job opportunities. Here I outline the statistics for many of the most majors and careers when it comes to engineering, math and science.

One thing to note is that science majors very often need additional education. Even in the video there are statistics that don't directly say a master's or PhD is required, however, you'll find many of the people in those jobs have one. Engineering jobs on the other hand often don't require anything past a bachelor's degree.

Remember that these statistics are just averages and are not a guarantee of what you'll make. Also note these are NOT starting salaries but rather averages over all people in the fields.

Automotive Engineering | Careers and Where to Begin

Automotive engineering is about the design, manufacturing, and operation of cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other automobiles. Within automotive engineering there are a variety of sub disciplines including safety, performance, vehicle dynamics, fuel economy, cost, manufacturing, and more.

For those who want to go into automotive engineering, note that most colleges don't offer it as a major in terms of undergrad. The most common major for people to begin with is actually mechanical engineering. Then after you get your bachelor's you either go into the workforce in the automotive industry, or pursue further education specifically in automotive engineering.

While in school you will want to get as much exposure to the field by joining clubs like the society of automotive engineers so you can participate in various competitions. This will give you something to put on your resume and get you that hands on experience that is so valuable for your career.

One big area of research at the moment is self driving cars. This is where you'll see much more than just mechanical engineering working on these vehicles. People from all disciplines including electrical engineers, computer engineers, materials engineers, computer scientists, and more are needed for these projects. However, there are more areas of research that are briefly mentioned in the video beyond self driving cars.
