The closest black hole to our solar system is 10 to 13 times the mass of our sun, and it’s located 3,000 light years away. But what would happen if a black hole came into our solar system?

SUMMARY:
- Black holes actually huge amounts of matter crammed into a teeny-tiny space. As a result, they have an extremely strong gravitational pull. In fact, it’s so powerful that even light can’t escape once a hole gets its hands on it.
- A big fat star collapses, then boom, black hole. Those ones are called stellar mass black holes. But there are also mega monsters called supermassive black holes. Those ones can be found churning slowly at the centers of galaxies.
- If our galaxy, the Milky Way, decided to rearrange itself, putting us a few dozen light years away from the center where a supermassive black hole lives (instead of 26,000 light years away), we’d be doomed.
- But what about a stellar mass black hole? They appear when stars run out of their star fuel and basically fall into themselves. This only happens if a star is big enough, like 3-10 times bigger than our sun.
- Here’s the thing I find most terrifying – we wouldn’t notice the black hole until it’s too late! The only detail that could give away the approaching black hole is a slight blurring of distant stars due to the hole’s gravitational lensing effect.
- As the gravitational pull of the black hole approaches each planet, it’ll play tug-of-war with our sun, ripping them all to pieces. As soon as the black hole reaches the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, we’ll start to feel its pull
- Before disappearing into the abyss, anything that falls into the gravitational pull of a black hole will go through a process called spaghettification.
- Basically, if anything gets too close to a black hole, before it falls in, it gets stretched waaaay out (like a spaghetti noodle!) due to the hole’s incredible gravity.
- According to scientific estimations, the odds of a black hole coming across our solar system, much less munching on our planet, are lower than the chance of winning the lottery ten times in a row.
- It turns out that almost all galaxies in the universe have their own supermassive black holes in the center of them. In some of these galaxies, the black holes can be billions of times more massive than our sun!

Black Holes… These monstrous and seemingly voids of black space suck in everything that gets too close to them; space dust, asteroids, planets, and even entire stars. The nearest one is 1,600 light-years from us. And in the region of the Universe visible from the Earth, there are perhaps 100 billion galaxies. Each one has around 100 million stellar-mass black holes in the center, ready to devour anything that gets close enough to its event horizon. But what would happen if all the black holes in the universe collided? Keep watching to find out.

There are so many black holes in the universe that it is impossible to count them, and there are even more we have not discovered.
If all of the known black holes were to collide together, it would be the end of the universe as we know it. Some of these stellar giants would be so massive that they would easily swallow smaller ones, and become even larger. And if these black holes were like ours and the ones inside the Andromeda galaxy, then you could imagine the incredible cosmic cataclysm if they all collided at once, perhaps creating a black hole so massive that it would suck in the entire universe. Entire stars would be stripped and sucked inside, planets ripped apart, collisions of planets and stars, those star collisions possibly creating more black holes. It would be a chain of cosmic destruction.

This Black Hole is Coming Towards Earth!

Andromeda is a spiral galaxy, located 2.5 Million light-years away from us. At the centre of this galaxy there is a massive Black Hole. This Black Hole is so big that it's 100 million times massive than our sun.

According to scientists, this Black Hole is coming towards us with the speed of 110 km per second. In 4.5 billion years from now andromeda will collide with our galaxy and when that happens, this Black Hole may hit the Earth.

Would shooting a black hole into an antimatter black hole destroy them both?

I’ve wondered out loud how it might be possible to destroy a black hole because I talk to myself and sometimes there’s a camera watching.

I’ve suggested a bunch of crazy ideas, like blasting it with rockets, shooting lasers at it, smashing planets into it. Nothing would work, everything would just make it bigger and angrier.

Turns out the only way to defeat a black hole is to sit on your hands and wait for it to evaporate. That’s not really helpful if you’re getting pulled into the black hole, and have sense of immediacy about it.

I mentioned one idea, antimatter, and dismissed it as just another hopeless and pointless way to enflame this galactic monstrosity.

But wait, you say, isn’t antimatter the opposite of regular matter. If you add a positive number and a negative number together, don’t they just cancel each other out?

Why won’t that green blooded pointy-eared hobgoblin of a science officer back me on this one?

Why can’t you just pump antimatter in to cancel out the regular matter of the black hole and cut a path to escape?

Antimatter is exactly the same as regular matter, except everything is backwards. Electrical charges, spin directions, and configuration of all the sub-particles that make it up. It’s all backwards.

Everything is opposite, except for mass. An anti-electron has the exact same amount of mass as electron.

Here’s the part you care about. When equal amounts of matter and antimatter collide, they are annihilated. But not disappeared or canceled out. They’re convert into pure energy.

As Einstein explained to us, mass and energy are just different aspects of the same thing. You can turn mass into energy, and you can turn energy into mass.

Black holes turn everything, both matter and energy, into more black hole.

Imagine a regular flavor and an antimatter flavor black hole with the same mass slamming together. The two would be annihilated and turn into pure energy.

Of course, the gravity of a black hole is so immense that nothing, not even light can escape. So all energy would just be turned instantaneously into more black hole. Want more black hole? Put things into the black hole.

If these two objects came together, you’d end up with a black hole with twice the mass that you had before.

Also, creating an antimatter black hole would be expensive. Antimatter is produced in particle accelerators, protons are accelerated in an enormous ring, pushed to nearly the speed of light, and then smashed into each other’s faces.

The collective momentum of the particle is converted into mass using Einstein’s famous e=mc2 calculation. Each collision creates a tiny handful of particles that could be collected and contained in a magnetic field to hold them in place and keep them from being annihilated.

According to NASA, a single gram of antihydrogen would cost about $62.5 trillion to create, the most expensive material we could possibly make on Earth.

It could be more expensive than that. It’s possible that the Large Hadron Collider is capable of creating microscopic black holes, although none have been created yet. If physicists could work out that math, then you could create microscopic antimatter black holes by smashing together anti-hydrogen particles, and the costs involved would dwarf the production of antimatter itself.

The bottom line is: If a regular black hole and an antimatter black hole got black-hole-married in space, they wouldn’t vanish.

Feeding in antimatter won’t do any good, it’s just like regular matter or energy. It only makes the black hole more massive. That should save you some money in wasteful antimatter production.
