3 Ways to Beat Social Anxiety! | Kati Morton
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. When we talk about social anxiety, that worry or nervousness is focused primarily on social interactions.
Anxiety is made up of 3 different components: The physiological part, cognitive part, and behavioral part.
Physiological Part: This is how anxiety feels in your body. The racing heart, sweaty palms, flushed face, or feeling faint. This is one of the most important components of anxiety because it’s the first one that people notice.
Cognitive Part: Our thoughts or thought processes. Any anxious thoughts we have would fall into this category. Such as “I am going to make a fool or myself” or “they will just think I am boring.” Any prediction that comes out of our anxiety would be considered part of the cognitive part.
Behavioral Part: For something to be part of this component it needs to be something someone else could notice us doing. This could be not making eye contact, stuttering or even fidgeting. This could also be something we aren’t doing because we are avoiding it, but someone could still notice that we didn’t go to lunch with the team like everyone else. Therefore avoiding something because of our anxiety would still fall under this category.
Most people with social anxiety don’t just experience one component. In fact, these 3 parts usually work together to intensify our anxious episodes. Therefore in order to overcome our social anxiety we are going to have to fight back against all 3 of them! The first step is Systematic Graduated Exposure. This is honestly just a fancy way of saying that we are going to have to slowly expose ourselves to the scary or anxiety-provoking thing until it’s no longer so scary. I have talked about exposure therapy in the past, and this is very similar, however, this is specific to social anxiety and it’s treatment. It’s important that this type of exposure therapy be done with a mental health professional so that we can role-play different scenarios in session, and get feedback on how it went. It also allows us to play out any situations or circumstances that we are afraid will happen when we try to do this outside of therapy. It also works because it gives you the time you need to see that any of the bodily responses you are having to the anxiety will go away after a while. As long as we are able to stay in the anxiety-provoking situation we can realize that our feelings of anxiety only last for a bit. And the more we practice it and expose ourselves to the anxious experiences, the better it gets. Also, by role-playing an anxiety-provoking social situation, we can test out any of our dysfunctional beliefs.

What is Social Anxiety?
Social Anxiety is a type of anxiety disorder that is much more than just being shy – it's an intense fear that when you are in a social situation you will be judged, humiliated or embarrassed.
Most people with social anxiety know that it's not rational to be so scared of social situations, but they feel they can't control their fear.
Social anxiety can sometimes occur when doing common things when others are around - such as eating, speaking, drinking, writing or going to the bathroom. It can lead to withdrawing from contact with others and affecting your everyday activities, self-confidence, relationships, and work or school life. Social anxiety often starts in your pre-teen years.
What are the SYMPTOMS of Social Anxiety?
* worry about your performance and being judged by others when you are in social situations
* dread or avoid everyday activities, such as meeting strangers, starting conversations, speaking on the phone, catching public transport, or talking to shop assistants
* avoid or worry a lot about social activities, such as group conversations, eating with company, and going to parties
* worry about doing something in public that you think is embarrassing, such as blushing, sweating, or making some social error
* find it difficult to do things when others might be watching – like eating, drinking, or writing
* often have symptoms such as feeling queasy, hot, sweating, trembling or a pounding heartbeat (palpitations) when anticipating or entering social situations
* have panic attacks panic attacks, where there is an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety (usually only for a few minutes).
What are the CAUSES of Social Anxiety?
* A specific incident or event – if you experienced shame or humiliation in a particular situation, you may develop anxiety about similar situations or experiences that you associate with that event.
* Family environment – parents who were very worried or anxious when you were growing up can have an effect on the way you cope with anxiety in later life, and you may even develop the same anxiety as a parent or older sibling.
* Genetics – some people appear to be born with a tendency to be more anxious than others, which can develop into an anxiety disorder.
* Long-term stress – this can cause feelings of anxiety and depression, and reduce your perceived ability to cope in particular situations. This can make you feel more fearful or anxious about being in those situations again, and over a long period, may increase your anxiety about those situations.
Sleep Hygiene Tips:
* Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends
* Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature
* Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart phones, from the bedroom
* Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime
* Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by a significant amount of fear in one or more social situations, causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some parts of daily life. These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others.
Physical symptoms often include excessive blushing, excess sweating, trembling, palpitations, and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcoholism, eating disorders or other kinds of substance abuse. SAD is sometimes referred to as an illness of lost opportunities where individuals make major life choices to accommodate their illness. According to ICD-10 guidelines, the main diagnostic criteria of social phobia are fear of being the focus of attention, or fear of behaving in a way that will be embarrassing or humiliating, avoidance and anxiety symptoms. Standardized rating scales can be used to screen for social anxiety disorder and measure the severity of anxiety.
The first line treatment for social anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with medications recommended only in those who are not interested in therapy. CBT is effective in treating social phobia, whether delivered individually or in a group setting. The cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought patterns and physical reactions to anxiety-inducing situations. The attention given to social anxiety disorder has significantly increased since 1999 with the approval and marketing of drugs for its treatment. Prescribed medications include several classes of antidepressants: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Other commonly used medications include beta blockers and benzodiazepines. It is the most common anxiety disorder with up to 10% of people being affected at some point in their life.
