Internet Expert Debunks Cybersecurity Myths | WIRED

Cybersecurity expert Eva Galperin helps debunk (and confirm!) some common myths about cybersecurity. Is the government watching you through your computer camera? Does Google read all your Gmail? Does a strong password protect you from hackers? Will encryption keep my data safe? Eva answers all these questions and much more.

Updated 8/20/2020: A previous version of this video incorrectly stated that Google scans Gmail data to target ads. Google stopped this practice in 2017.

Eva Galperin is the Director of Cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Using 'stalkerware' to spy on a colleague's phone - BBC News

Women's charities are concerned by new research that shows a rise in the use of so-called 'stalkerware'.

The surveillance software allows someone complete access to a victim's phone showing private messages, GPS location and even giving someone the ability to see and hear through cameras and microphones.

The technology is openly sold online as 'parental or employee monitoring' kits, and use of it has risen by at least 37% in the last year.

The BBC's cyber-security reporter Joe Tidy let a colleague spy on his phone for two days to show how easy it is.

Full access to a person's phone is the next best thing to full access to a person's mind, says cybersecurity expert Eva Galperin. In an urgent talk, she describes the emerging danger of stalkerware -- software designed to spy on someone by gaining access to their devices without their knowledge -- and calls on antivirus companies to recognize these programs as malicious in order to discourage abusers and protect victims.

Where Do We Go From Here? Stalkerware, Spouseware, and What We Should Do About It

Eva Galperin is EFF's Director of Cybersecurity. Prior to 2007, when she came to work for EFF, Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. Her work is primarily focused on providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. To that end, she has applied the combination of her political science and technical background to everything from organizing EFF's Tor Relay Challenge, to writing privacy and security training materials (including Surveillance Self Defense and the Digital First Aid Kit), and publishing research on malware in Syria, Vietnam, Kazakhstan. When she is not collecting new and exotic malware, she practices aerial circus arts and learning new languages.

EFF’s Eva Galperin says stalkerware can be used by abusers to stalk their victims

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but it also marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Electronic Frontier Foundation Director of Cybersecurity Eva Galperin, who works with abuse victims, says these victims can also be the targets of stealth software that can be used to track their every move. ‘Most people who are being spied on in their lives are not being spied on by governments or law enforcement. They are being spied on by stalkers or by exes or by people with whom they are currently in an abusive relationship.’

Сybersecurity professionals: Eva Galperin

What does it mean to be a #cybersecurity #professional nowadays? Life itself sends Eva topics to investigate and open the world’s eyes. In this video, Eva Galperin describes the secrets of her success.

Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation and head of EFF’s Threat Lab.

“My advice for aspiring young security researchers is to look where no one else is looking. When everyone is looking at supply-chain attacks or China or Russia or Iran, there are a lot of eyes on the problem. A lot of the most interesting research that I have ever done has been focused on looking where no one else thinks is worthwhile.”

Do you know what is a stalkerware? Maybe you’re being spied on and you don’t know ????️

Frederic Thenault, CEO of Syneidis, presents another brief episode of cybersecurity news.

Did you know that you can spy on other people with a simple mobile app? ????️????

These apps are called spyware, and for less than $100, they allow anyone to gain illegal access to a range of personal data.

Anyone can be a victim, or a victimizer of a spyware, making this kind of malware one of the most dangerous forms of hacking, as it even enables domestic abuse. They are also known as “stalkerware” or “spouseware”. And of course women are the main victims! ????♀️

These apps are more dangerous than they look, the damage they cause to their victims is serious, and it is precisely what people like Eva Galperin struggle to eradicate … ????

She’s the Director of Cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation and technical advisor for the Freedom of the Press Foundation. In a recent interview with Wired Magazine, she explained how she aims at eradicating spyware.

When Galperin started this fight, she could not imagine what she would discover through her investigation: that so many abusers threaten to hack the victims’ devices as a means of exerting undue control over them.

Thanks to her fight, Galperin achieved that Kaspersky, the Russian security firm, made a significant change to how its antivirus software treats stalkerware.

The cybersecurity industry still has a long battle against stalkerware. Just last year Kaspersky Lab detected stalkerware on over 58.000 cell phones, just a portion of the total number of people who have been targeted with stalkerware, given that Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus is installed only on a fraction of Android devices. So the total number is likely much higher…

Frederic invites you to be alert, reading our cybersecurity blog to know more about spyware and other related topics, and how to defend yourself from them.
