Why The YouTube Algorithm Will Always Be A Mystery

The mysterious YouTube algorithm. It's confused people for years, and will continue to do so. So why isn't YouTube more transparent? It used to be that they wouldn't tell anyone how it works - but now, it's that they can't. Let's talk about deep learning algorithms, neural networks, and search engine optimisation.

CREDITS:

Thanks to animator Matt Ley for the wonderful cartoon of me:

I put this together in three days, plus a day of checking and proofing, in Adobe After Effects. It took about eight hours to render, but that's because every frame has keying, lighting, camera, and motion blur effects, and because the original footage of me was in 4.6k lossless.

Yes, the sound of the black box working is the sound of a microwave (it's the one in my kitchen). Also, those aren't faked desktop screenshots, I had to install a copy of Windows ME to make this.

SOURCES:

Deep Neural Networks for YouTube Recommendations, [PDF] — some people are saying this link 404s, but it works for me? Search for the title and you'll find it.

There's a good layperson summary of the paper here:

The Defamation Act is published under the Open Government License 3.0: and is available at

The music in the cartoon section is called 'Ukulele Beach', and it's in the YouTube audio library.

REFERENCES:

There are a lot of references and in-jokes in here, and hopefully people will spot most of them in the comments. But if anyone wants confirmation: yes, there are references to Billy Joel, Aqua, a He-Man remix, and Elton John. The last one's pretty obscure, well done to you at home if you got that.

How Dream is a YouTube MASTERMIND - 1k to 2 million in 9 months

One of the fastest growing Minecraft channels today is Dream, who is currently sitting at around 2.18 million subscribers. I wouldn’t be surprised if that sub count is outdated by the time this video goes up. Ever since mid December of 2019, the only one of his currently-public videos to not have gotten to 1 million views is Unsolved Mystery of Minecraft Sharks 3 months ago. He may not be the most popular Minecraft channel, but he is certainly up there.

But what if I told you that less than a year ago, he had barely over 1000 subscribers? Dream is a channel I’ve paid close attention to ever since his first breakthrough regarding PewDiePie’s Minecraft World Seed and I’ve gotta say, this man is a YouTube mastermind.

Dream has studied various YouTubers and the YouTube algorithm. Clearly, his rise is no accident. While he almost certainly didn’t plan out every single video idea far ahead of time, he’s proven himself to make great judgement calls as they come. His path to success is clearly calculated.

Today, we’re going to be taking a look at what makes Dream such a successful YouTuber and how he turned a dream into reality. To understand how this all came to be, we will be examining 3 key factors: how he accumulated his initial following, how he consolidated that audience, and how he edits his videos.

There is No Algorithm for Truth - with Tom Scott

How does science get communicated in an age of social media?

In this Discourse, Tom Scott talks about science communication in the age of social media, how to be popular on the internet, and dealing with a world where view counts are often more important than truth.

Watch the Q&A:

Tom Scott is a British entertainer, educator, YouTuber, web developer and former presenter of 'Gadget Geeks' on Sky One. He graduated from the University of York with a degree in linguistics. He has a popular YouTube channel with over 1.6 million subscribers and more than 325 million video views as of June 2019.

In more than fifteen years of publishing on the internet, Tom has visited the High Arctic, passed out in a centrifuge, and somehow got three million people to watch a video about why the British plug is a great invention.

This talk and Q&A was filmed in the Ri on 27 September 2019.

What's Behind the YouTube Algorithm? (Part 1 of 3)

There are over one billion users on YouTube with over 400 hours of content released every minute. How does YouTube know what to show you?

Part 2 of 3 -
Part 3 of 3 - Coming soon!

Read More:

How an ex-YouTube insider investigated its secret algorithm

YouTube’s recommendation system draws on techniques in to decide which videos are auto-played or appear “up next”. The precise formula it uses, however, is kept secret. Aggregate data revealing which YouTube videos are heavily promoted by the algorithm, or how many views individual videos receive from “up next” suggestions, is also withheld from the public.

Back to Basics: Algorithms

The word algorithm was derived from the name Al-Khwarizmi, a 9th-century Persian mathematician and author of The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing. But nowadays the word most often applies to a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem with a computer.

How Google Works

Google's search engine is a powerful tool. Without search engines like Google, it would be practically impossible to find the information you need when you browse the Web. Like all search engines, Google uses a special algorithm to generate search results. While Google shares general facts about its algorithm, the specifics are a company secret.

The nightmare videos of childrens' YouTube — and what's wrong with the internet today | James Bridle

Writer and artist James Bridle uncovers a dark, strange corner of the internet, where unknown people or groups on YouTube hack the brains of young children in return for advertising revenue. From surprise egg reveals and the Finger Family Song to algorithmically created mashups of familiar cartoon characters in violent situations, these videos exploit and terrify young minds -- and they tell us something about where our increasingly data-driven world is headed. We need to stop thinking about technology as a solution to all of our problems, but think of it as a guide to what those problems actually are, so we can start thinking about them properly and start to address them, Bridle says.

Weird Kids' Videos and Gaming the Algorithm

Clickbait Title: Video Criticism YouTube Exploitation Meta Commentary Pregnant Algorithm Educational Spam Fidget Spinner Buried Alive For Kids

Very late in the process of making this I decided to change the name, largely because the moment I made the original title YouTube and the Business of Exploiting Children public in a promotional Tweet I realized that there was an entire constellation of related issues that I wanted to talk about. From channels that exist to get kids hooked on gambling to parents subjecting their children to abusive conditions as pranks, there's a lot of shady stuff going on. In that context, weird spam and unsettling videos about poop didn't rank high enough to warrant burning a title that good.
