Think you can't draw? | Salla Lehtipuu | TEDxTurku

This talk was given at a local TEDx event called TEDxTurku, produced independently of the TED Conferences.

Salla Lehtipuu works by doing live sketchnoting and visual recording in events, seminars, workshops and business strategy processes. She also teaches workshops and gives speeches about how to apply doodling and visual thinking to your daily life and work.

Often people comment her drawings with “Oh I wish I could do that” or “ I wish I could draw!” Salla believes everyone is more talented in drawing than they give themselves credit for. Anyone can draw!

Salla is interested in facilitating learning with the help of arts. Her aim is to bring more visual tools to people in order to create better possibilities for learning and understanding. Her background is in studies of business and entrepreneurship (BBA) and arts. Visual facilitation benefits from the knowledge of both fields: visual facilitation is a combination of text, colours, drawing and various shapes to enable better learning and common understanding in bigger groups. Everyone can Draw, even YOU!

All those teachers who claim they were teaching children to write were wrong, they were doing something quite different. This video explains everything. In this short motivational art video I explain that everyone in the world can draw, providing they can write. I'll show how our brains are programmed to read shapes and these simple shapes occur in our writing and in our drawing. I'll show that teachers were not teaching you to write but to draw. What I'm aiming to do here is to motivate people and show that if you can write you can draw and just how ridiculous the statement, 'I can't draw really is'. Apologies for the Chinese character that appears in this video, I checked it out on Goggle Translate, but it's been pointed out it's not good calligraphy.

2 Techniques that Pro Comic Artists use EVERY DAY

Ryan Benjamin is a comic artist who has worked for both DC and Marvel and he has some valuable techniques to share when it comes to drawing comics. First, you’ll learn about the materials that Ryan uses to set up all of his pages. He then transitions to the early stages of layout using his red pencil. He views the red pencil as his thinking tool, and then when he’s ready, he switches to rendering with a standard pencil and turns his brain off. This is a process that he’s used over and over and now it’s become second nature to him. He finishes his demo by showing you his shading technique using 3 values while hatching. There’s more Ryan Benjamin lessons on the way so be sure to subscribe and hit the bell icon so you’re notified when new lessons come out!

So You Think You Can’t Draw A Workshop to Prove you CAN Facilitate with Visuals

Visual Facilitation Workshop - 12 -13 October 2017
Contact :
Facebook:
LinkedIn:
Company website:

The way we learn is 83% visual, and articles with images attract 94% more eyeballs.
Yet for many of us, the thought of facilitating with visuals (hand-drawn or not) frightens us more than public speaking, and we’d rather drown in the sea of ideas.
So You Think You CAN’T Draw, but don’t want to miss out on the benefits of capturing verbally shared ideas in visuals to facilitate your group’s strategic outcomes? Then join us at this workshop where you will learn the basics of drawing out ideas, and drawing together people and plans.
So You Think You CAN’T Draw is a unique workshop to prove facilitators, trainers, coaches, consultants, teachers and anyone (that includes YOU!) that you can facilitate with visuals to make meetings not just more interesting, but intentional, purposeful, and on-target!

What Will I Achieve?
Want to Get Work Done Doodling through quick, practical hacks?
Want to develop as a Graphic Recorder who captures verbally shared ideas visually for groups’ review, engagement and action (plus boost your ability to listen and organise ideas on the fly!)?
Want to develop as a Graphic Facilitator who uses visuals to facilitate groups and their conversations, sense-make, and move them towards group outcomes (experience the generative power of visuals along the way!)?

Kailin Huang
Founder & Chief Doodler
I founded Picture People Plan to help people picture their plans and ideas with smart, large, hardworking visuals which I create lovingly by hand (even if it’s digital).

I’ve graphic recorded and graphic facilitated for a dizzying diversity of projects, events and meetings. They range from exciting high-signature events such as the inaugural Digital Government Exchange (DGX) 2016 and Singapore Airshow Aviation Leadership Summit (SAALS) 2016), to cosy learning experiences such as *SCAPE Same Same But Different Festival, focus group discussions, workshops and dialogue sessions.

To help others do what I do best, I design and facilitate workshops – 12 workshops across Asia in the past 12 months, to be precise, and more to come. I’ve been very privileged to be hosted by the 19th International Association of Facilitators Asia Conference and Facilitators Forum Thailand on some of these.

I’m an active member of the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) and formerly Board Member of the International Forum of Visual Practitioners (IFVP).

I’m proudly bilingual, and hope to work visually with you soon in English and/or Chinese! : )
