Hyperloop One test: World’s first full-size hyperloop test in Las Vegas - TomoNews

LAS VEGAS — Hyperloop One announced last week that it plans to execute a full test within the next three months at Apex Industrial Park in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The test run will cover 500 linear meters, said Nick Earle, the company’s senior vice president of global field operations.

“It will levitate, catch the right speed and slow down,” Earle said. “Then what we’ll do, is over the next few months extend that into a few kilometers,” he said.

In May 2016, the company successfully tested its levitating electromagnetic motor on an open air sled, reaching speeds of 116 mph, according to Wired.

Earle also told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the company is planning to have a full Hyperloop system ready to transport freight by 2020.

The hyperloop is based on the idea by Elon Musk of levitating pods that would travel in near-vacuum tubes at speeds of over 700 mph, powered by an electric propulsion system, according to Wired.

According to Musk’s calculations, a hyperloop trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles would take only 36 minutes, Wired reported.

China announces plans to build a 2,500mph train to rival the Hyperloop

Read the original article:

WHY THIS MATTERS IN BRIEF: When people looked into the future they saw faster more efficient planes that made trains obsolete, but the tables look like they’re starting to turn.

As the race to be the first company to build the world’s first commercial Hyperloop network, a network of Mach 1.0 levitating trains that travel in vacuum tubes, hots up, with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), Hyperloop One and Tesla all starting to break a sweat as they put their prototypes through their paces the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has claimed it plans to develop the next generation of trains, which can travel at speeds of up to 2,500mph. Or is that the next, next generation of trains? Anyway…

Liu Shiquan, a deputy general manager at CASC, said their scientists would be looking to develop the super-fast trains of the future that could “fly on the ground,” and they seem to have dubbed the initiative as “T-Flight.”
“The corporation has built rich experience and accumulated technological know-how through major projects, and it has the capabilities in simulation, modelling and experimentation for large-scale projects, as well as the world-class design capability for supersonic aircraft, all of which lay the important ground for the super-fast train project,” said Shiquan.

With connections to China’s defence ministry, CASC has already been involved in developing satellites, rockets and missiles, and now it looks as though plans are afoot to turn its attention on futuristic technology that’s closer to home.

China already has the largest network of high speed trains in the world, and recently they announced another $500 Billion in funding so it’s obvious that they’re keen to continue outstripping the competition.

CASC officials have said they will work with more than 20 other research institutes, both domestic and international, in the quest to create the proposed 2,500mph trains, and although the ‘flying train’ may be a way off becoming a reality another team of Chinese scientists recently announced plans to create a more down to Earth 600mph inter-city train built on the same Hyperloop concept we’re seeing across the water in the US. And as all of these technologies continue their relentless march to becoming reality you have to ask the question – in the future why would anyone want to bother getting on board a plane which increasingly looks like they’ll be the futuristic equivalent of taking the bus…

Does anyone else want to disrupt the airline and transportation industry? Take a ticket and stand in line.

Elon Musk's hyperloop could revolutionise public transport | The Economist

Elon Musk's Hyperloop technology has the potential to revolutionise the way we travel. In a contest he held in Los Angeles, some of the world's brightest engineers gathered to find the best way to make this billionaire's pipe dream a reality.

Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube:

Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla Motors and SpaceX, wants to revolutionise public transport. In 2017 he held an event at SpaceX's California headquarters showcasing the latest technology for what he believes is the future of intercity travel. An entirely new transport system, called Hyperloop.

What this is all about is advancing the state of transportation; trying new things that have never been done before that can make an incredible difference to peoples lives.

But is Hyperloop ready to usher in a new age of mass transit or is it just a billionaire's pipe dream?

In 1829 a competition was held to find the best locomotive engine for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, in northern England. George Stephenson's Rocket won first prize, posting a top speed of 38km per hour. Widely credited as the world's first steam locomotive the Rocket transformed how people travelled between cities.

Almost two centuries on, Musk is hosting the modern-day equivalent of that competition and teams of engineers from around the world have come to Los Angeles to compete, head-to-head. The aim is to bring Hyperloop one step closer to reality.

But what exactly is Hyperloop?

Hyperloop One Colorado: Rocky Mountain Hyperloop route selected for Hyperloop project - TomoNews

DENVER — Hyperloop One announced Colorado would be one of the 10 finalists in its global competition to identify the best potential Hyperloop routes.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is working with the Hyperloop company to carry out a feasibility study for the proposed route between Cheyenne, Denver and Pueblo, Techcrunch reported.

The feasibility study could cost up to $1 million and take years to complete, CBS 4 reported.

The proposed route would stretch 360 miles and link 10 urban centers around the state, with the potential to connect over 4,800,000 people, according to Techcrunch.

A Hyperloop trip from Denver to Pueblo would take 15 minutes, while Denver to Fort Collins would only take 9 minutes. Denver to Vail would also be 9 minutes.

Three other U.S. routes were chosen by Hyperloop as finalists: Chicago-Columbus-Pittsburgh, Miami-Orlando and Dallas-Laredo-Houston.

Hyperloop One plans for its first functional prototypes to be running as early as 2020.

California high speed train to Las Vegas - Virgin Trains USA

Virgin Trains USA (now Brightline and XPress West) has outlined its plans for the high-speed California train to Las Vegas. The project is expected to break ground this year and be completed by 2023. It will focus on a first-class customer experience, with drinks in hand upon entry and bags checked in your Las Vegas hotel on arrival. The train will take roughly 1 1/2 hours from its Victorville or Apple Valley station to Las Vegas; normally a 3-4 hour drive, depending on traffic. The company plans to eventually extend west to Palmdale and connect down the Cajon Pass to Rancho Cucamonga station, which will connect to Los Angeles.
