Your body language may shape who you are | Amy Cuddy

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that power posing -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success. (Note: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility. Read Amy Cuddy's response here:

Amy Cuddy - Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are

How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is, Boroditsky says. Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000.

Amy Cuddy - A linguagem corporal molda quem você é

Entender o nosso corpo é uma ferramenta muito importante para invocar a motivação na hora certa. Existem posições que estimulam nossa mente, nos tornando mais poderosos para enfrentar a vida. Update 19th April 2018 See for fresh evidence that posture can be beneficial. Previously in September 2016 I read an interesting article pointing out that the results of Ms Cuddy's work have not been replicated.

I have continued to encourage audiences and groups being trained where MAX Conflict Management has mentioned this study just to have a go and there is certainly a huge amount of anecdotal evidence that many find these techniques beneficial, imagined or otherwise. I first uploaded this in Sep 2013 (today it has been viewed 142 966 times) and have been using this type of practical simple intervention in our training alongside other great techniques ever since. Hope you find it interesting and useful. Thanks, Mark

Our minds change our bodies but our bodies change our minds. This was the highlight of the most watched Ted-Ed talk online titled, ‘Your body language shapes who you are”, delivered by Social Psychologist Amy Cuddy in 2012. This talk clarified the correlation between posture and body language to someone’s state of mind and how people accept him or her.

Cuddy graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1998. She also received her Masteral and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University. Her thesis was The Bias Map: Behavior from intergroup affect and stereotypes.

In 2007, Cuddy together with Susan Fiske and Peter Glick proposed the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) Map model which explains how individuals make judgments of other people and groups within two core trait dimensions, warmth, and competence, and to discern how these judgments shape and motivate our social emotions, intentions, and behaviors.

She was also notable for her experiments on power posing and how doing it for as little as two minutes can increase testosterone, decrease cortisol, increase appetite for risk, and cause better performance in job interviews.

In 2015, Cuddy published a self-help book, Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges which also advocated the practice of power posing. The book ranked as high as #3 in the New York Times Best Seller list in February 2016. It was translated into 32 languages.

Amy Cuddy was awarded the TIME magazine 'Game Changer' Award in 2012 and the World Economic Forum Young Global Leader Award in 2014.

Amy Cuddy argues that power posing — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident — can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success.
