MOVING COIL GALVANOMETER: Principle, Construction and Theory | Physics Video Tutorials

Moving coil galvanometer is a device used for measuring the
current in a circuit. The Principle of moving coil galvanometer is, that a current carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a torque.

It consists of a rectangular coil of a large number of turns of thin
insulated copper wire wound over a light metallic frame. The
coil is suspended between the pole pieces of a horse-shoe magnet by a fine phosphor – bronze strip from a movable torsion head. The lower end of the coil is connected to a hair spring (HS) of phosphor bronze having only a few turns. The other end of the spring is connected to a binding screw. A soft iron cylinder is placed symmetrically inside the coil. The hemispherical magnetic poles produce a radial magnetic field in which the plane of the coil is parallel to the magnetic field in all its positions. A small plane mirror (m) attached to the suspension wire is used along with a lamp and scale arrangement to measure the deflection of the coil.

Let PQRS be a single turn of the coil. A current I flows through the coil. In a radial magnetic field, the plane of the coil is always parallel to the magnetic field. Hence the sides QR and SP are always parallel to the field. So, they do not experience any force. The sides PQ and RS are always perpendicular to the field.

PQ = RS = l, length of the coil and PS = QR = b, breadth of the coil
Force on PQ, F = BI (PQ) = BIl. According to Fleming’s left hand
rule, this force is normal to the plane of the coil and acts outwards.

A galvanometer is an electromechanical instrument for detecting and measuring electric current. The most common use of galvanometers was as analog measuring instruments, called ammeters, used to measure the direct current (flow of electric charge) through an electric circuit.


In this Physics video lecture in Hindi for class 12 we explained the construction and working principle of a moving coil galvanometer and die the derivation of current sensitivity and voltage sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer. We also talked about the factors affecting the sensitivity of a galvanometer. A galvanometer is an electrical instrument which can detect a very small current. We know that a current carrying coil rotates in a magnetic field, because it experiences a torque. The moving coil galvanometer works on this principle. As it is attached with a spring, this spring applies a restoring torque when the coil rotates. When the magnitude of both the torques are the same, the coil experiences a rotational equilibrium. A needle is attached to the coil and hence it also deflects. The deflection (measured in radian) is the product of the number of turns in the coil, the current, the area of the coil and the magnitude of the magnetic field divided by the torsional rigidity of the spring. Torsional rigidity is torque per unit twist.
Proper calibration can give us the exact amount of current flowing through the coil of the galvanometer. The created magnetic field is a radial magnetic field.

A moving coil galvanometer consists of a strong horse - shoe magnet with concave shaped poles N and S . A rectangular coil of insulated copper wire wound on a non - conducting frame is suspended between the magnetic poles by means of a phosphor - bronze thread P from a torsion head T1 . A small mirror M is fitted to the thread a little above the coil . The phosphor - bronze has high Young's modulus and very low rigidity modulus . Hence , it can easily be twisted but cannot be elongated . The lower end of coil is connected to a binding spring T2 . A soft iron cylinder I is a placed inside the coil without any connection with the coil .
